How do you entertain when you are the mother of small children?

It's a bit of a challenge at times so we try to keep things casual and child friendly. We plan menus with adults and children in mind, usually selecting things we can prepare ahead, and sometimes making something special just for the young ones. I want family and friends to feel like they can bring their children, wander about, sit anywhere, just make themselves at home. There are play spaces upstairs and downstairs for the kids and they are free to go to any of those. In the summer we like to be outdoors, which is perfect for the children.
