We had about 2' in planter width to work with. We used a clumping type of Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex 'Alphonse Karr') which is a manageable bamboo, grows about 10' controlled--never pruned it can reach to 30'. The taller the bamboo, the more width you will need. As you may know some types of running bamboo's are very invasive and can grow across property lines and end up in a neighbor's yard down the street--not just next door. Let us know if you have any other questions.
