Symmetrical FacadeThe typical form of original Federal, or Adam, houses is a simple box shape, usually two to three rooms deep, with a symmetrical arrangement of doors and windows, especially on the front. Later additions to the sides and rear are common. Today's update: Symmetry is pleasing to the eye, no doubt about it. If you're house's facade is asymmetrical, you can achieve a similar affect by focusing on one area, such as the entry. Try a pair of lanterns, planters, or window boxes for an orderly effect.

As America grew and became more prosperous, the homes became larger and built of more expensive materials. And more pronounced regional differences became evident as well. While in the Northeast the houses continued to be massive and fortresses against the harsh winter ...

Exterior of historical house. A true historic treasure, this St. Paul, Minn. home was built for the granddaughter of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow — a famous American poet from the 19th century

This remodel was beautiful and would be perfect for restoring our house! Love this!
Simmons made very few changes to the exterior; the look of the home is virtually the same as it was originally intended. The house was built to be 100 percent symmetrical, right down to his-and-her powder rooms on either side of the home. A home that's survived so many eras of design is bound to be full of surprises. Besides the hidden rooms and false ceilings, Simmons discovered a creek leading to the Mississippi River through a manhole in the basement floor!More:Houzz Tour: A Brooklyn Landmark Returns to GloryHouzz Tour: See a Traditional Home for a Modern LifeHistory Comes Home: The Story of Toile
