Is there a formula for determining the exhaust fan size in relationship to the BBQ?

Yes. The manufacturer of the hood generally offers specifics for the fan motor/hood choices they offer. As a general rule, for the exhaust to function properly, the length and number of bends in exhaust piping must be kept to a minimum and as the number of bends and length of run increase, so should the horsepower or CFM (cubic feet of air moved per minute) capability of the motor in combination often with an increase in the diameter of the exhaust pipe. Also, in our experience, it is best NOT to skimp on quality with an exhaust hood. Purchase the very best you can afford and precisely follow the manufacturers recommendations.
