Typical of many San Francisco Victorians, this home’s kitchen had evolved over the years out of an enclosed porch. The centerpiece of the new light-filled space is a custom island / drop-leaf table that converts from a casual family dining area to an ample area for the children’s art projects, or seating for twelve. Open shelving and a series of custom ledges for the family’s seasonal canning efforts intensify the casual, working feel to the kitchen, which is both modern, yet appropriate to the essence of the home.
Love the tier'd effect of this kitchen-dining combo space. The attached dining table sits on a lower plane than the kitchen. One activity trickles down to the next, like water trickling down steps --- here, from cooking, to eating. The "tiers" of this design connects to the tiered brick plantings just outside the sliding doors.
Here are the vintage industrial stools in another setting. It's funny, I've used this kitchen facing 180 degrees the other way, but I never knew what a great view it had. I'm very envious of those windows.
Casual Modern
Warm wood details around this modern kitchen — including the material of the stools — help provide a more casual vibe. Twirling seats don't hurt, either.
Schwartz strived to create a space that is calm and clean. He likes to use a few basic materials and detail them well rather than insert many different components into the design.
Vintage stools. This look adds a bit of age to a modern kitchen. If you're worried about finding a matching set of truly antique stools, there are some wonderful new options you can buy based on old designs. Three of my favorites are the Toledo Stool (pictured above), the Contact Stool, and the Tolix Stool.

Adding a leaf to the dining table is old news. But what about adding a table to your kitchen island? The centerpiece of this kitchen is its custom island and drop-leaf table that converts from a casual family dining area to seating for 10 to 12. You can plan a feature like this for your next kitchen and, for this year, bring a counter-height table up to your island for a similar effect.

A sliding door is not meant to always be slammed shut with a 2-by-4 wedged against it as extra protection from intruders. Open the door to the fall breezes whenever you can.
concept of eating counter perpendicular to island. Can use granite in island and reclaimed wood for seating area or just a farm house table against counter?
