Cathy Schwabe Architecture Hi -
The siding is Western Red Cedar -- it was applied using a rain screen assembly with a fully vented and screened back side. We use 3 coats of a penetrating sealer -- the first coat was applied prior to the installation, so that all faces of each piece of wood were sealed. The second two coats were applied to the visible surfaces - and every cut joint was also sealed during installation. I expect that depending on the orientation, the siding will need refinishing, every 3 - 5 years to keep it well protected.
One alternate to consider would be the composite wood products by companies such as Hardie - especially if regular maintenance is not appealing and if the natural wood look is not essential to your design.
Thanks for the question.

We can draw out the layout to scale. I can go measure the space and scale it if you want. We could make the exterior pads proportional to the tile. Ie, tile is 12x24, we could stick with 36x72 as a consistent size in the rear and stair step stack the pads.
