Come in and stay a while. Have a drink and something to eat, let's talk all night long! What could have been a cold empty terrace has been turned into a warm, sophisticated, intimate space. The eye is immediately drawn up the vertical inserts in the brick wall to the mirrors. Had the mirrors been bigger the emphasis would have been over-powering in the space; any smaller and there would be a problem with the scale relationship. The symmetrical placements of the mirrors and plants gives the illusion of a fireplace and the room a touch of formality & sophistication. Yet, the color & texture of the brick in addition to the horizontal lines created in laying the bricks give a casual warm feeling.Notice the repetition in horizontal lines seen in the wood planks that make up the bench and planter box. The large stone tiles repeat the pattern in the brick. The lines in the wood table.Brick is a warm color and is used in a softer hue in accent pillows. The choice of a warm rich color wood for the bench and planters blends with the brick walls, leaving as much open space in the room as possible. Several plants were chosen that have exposed wood/brick color stems in addition to their vibrant green foliage that pops against the contrast of the brick wall. Draw your attention again to the symmetrical balance of the wall. The plants are the right scale in relationship to the mirrors and negative space. The symmetrical design choices for this brick wall acts as a subtle reminder that, although the room is casual and warm, one must not forget ones manners! The grey fabric chosen for the bench pillow repeats a subtle line pattern and the color lifts up the stone floor, while giving a nice cool contrast to the brick wall. The choice of using a cool blue grey stone brings the floor and sky together, lifting the whole space. Yet the brick walls ground for a sense of security. The choice of black grout between the tiles in the floor, black chairs with wood frames and a black geometric accent pillow shows that the smallest of detail was not overlooked. The choice of using black leather (sleek, sophisticated and grounding) with wood frames (warm, casual and lifting) is consistent with the over all feeling of the space. The geometric design in the black accent pillow is repeated in the choice of bamboo candle holders. The choice of a round shaped table, oval shaped mirrors, cylinder shaped candle holders, and circular shaped plants all add interest and just the right amount of softness to a sharp angled space.Because attention was paid to the 7 design elements and design principles were understood, the designer has achieved harmony, the space has a soul and a life all it's own!
