That is such a beautiful space. I'm trying to do the same thing with little bluestem. Hope it even gets close. Thank you for this.

Olives are so gorgeous! Can you give a few tips for purchasing lovely, kind of mature olives that won't break the bank? My client and I were shopping for mature olives and gave that up when faced with price tags in the several thousand dollar-ish range.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Situating stronger plantings in the midst of a field of grass gives the illusion of floating trees. When the wind blows, the grasses dance around the tree trunks, tickling their feet.
Cassy Aoyagi, FormLA Landscaping added this to Smart Landscaping Slices Energy Bills
Hardscapes such as concrete drives and patios are known for increasing the "heat island" effect. When sunlight reflects off their hard surfaces, it reverberates, heating an area. Opting for green foliage, even at ground height, keeps a space cool.A meadow like this, especially as an alternative to a traditional lawn, is a great bang-for-the-buck sustainable landscaping strategy. It produces dramatic improvements in both indoor and outdoor air quality. By reducing the need for energy and water, it can save a family as much as $2,500 per 1,000 square feet each year.
Genevieve Schmidt added this to 8 Ornamental Grasses for Coastal Gardens
California red fescue: Festuca rubra is native to California and makes an excellent lawn substitute in coastal areas. It holds the sandy soil down and takes little water or care to develop a flowing texture and healthy green look.
Maybe this is your image of slow gardening — a quiet place where you can sit in the sun without a care about the uncut lawn or flowers to deadhead.Above all there are no hard rules to Slow Gardening. Your garden should suit your lifestyle and environment, and allow you to relax, take your time and follow the seasonal rhythms. So, perhaps the hippies had the right idea in the first place.More: What to do (or not) in your garden now
Benjamin Vogt / Monarch Gardens added this to How to Get Your Prairie On
If you live in a cooler climate or at higher elevation, you can stretch the rules a bit and let red fescue grow long and create undulating waves 4 to 6 inches tall. A few well-placed trees in the grass create a park- or prairie-like feel and are very low maintenance.
Falon Land Studio LLC added this to How to Switch to an Organic Landscape Plan
Mowing. Mowing has a huge impact on the health of an organic lawn. Setting your mower to a higher height that allows the grass to grow longer will actually help shade out some weeds.

You also have the option of completely reworking your lawn into a short-grass meadow of sedges (the Carex genus of grasses). Carex grasses that are native to your region can be densely planted and allowed to grow long to provide a very nice natural look. This type of alternative lawn has been growing in popularity as more gardeners are discovering the beauty of long grasses.

If you just want a lawn replacement, a seeding of buffalo grass or blue grama works great for a 6- to 8-inch cover you can even mow once in a while if you like (but consider letting it grow to form a natural, wavy habit). Prairies in our landscapes don't have to be tall or complex or messy. Great grasses for a new lawn
