What Houzz contributors are saying:

Ito's first important building, and a symbol of his early minimalist phase, is the White U house in Tokyo (completed 1976, demolished 1997). Stan Allen, in a book based on a Toyo Ito lecture at Princeton, called it "arguably the most radical house of the twentieth century," and it's easy to see how the house breaks from the traditional fabric of its surroundings. It turns a blank face to the street and introverts its gaze to the courtyard; even the slope of the roof reinforces this emphasis.

Privacy: White U, Nakano-ku, Tokyo, by Toyo Ito (1976). Some may choose to retreat behind an impenetrable enclosure in a desire for privacy or for shelter from a hostile environment. Alternatively, others may prefer to open up to the world with walls of glass.More about this house

The Hyatt Foundation has awarded the 2013 Pritzker Architecture Prize to Toyo Ito, 71, of Japan. Ito has created some of the most outstanding architecture of the past few decades, and since the tsunami in 2011 he has been overtly concerned with humanitarian efforts in his own country. He is the sixth architect from Japan to win what is considered the highest honor in architecture; the previous ones are Kenzo Tange (1987), Fumihiko Maki (1993), Tadao Ando (1995) and the duo Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa (2010). Ito has been practicing since the 1970s, but his large portfolio of completed buildings belies any formal consistency or linear evolution in his architecture. “When one building is completed," he says, "I become painfully aware of my own inadequacy, and it turns into energy to challenge the next project. Probably this process must keep repeating itself in the future. Therefore, I will never fix my architectural style and never be satisfied with my works." A formal ceremony will be held at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston on Wednesday, May 29, JFK's birthday.
