Gorgeous Deck! - Aesthetically, I love the appearance of this deck. I have never walked on an Ipe or Teak tiled deck--does it feel not as "solid" as a standard deck? »
Weather proofing - I have been reading that these tiles tend to expand and contract with the weather. Are there any tiles that are not made of hardwood that would not have this problem? Some sort of manmade material like Trex decking? »
Koch Architects, Inc. Joanne Koch The tiles are made of Ipea hardwood. Given that they are small slats with gaps between them, there is not a problem with expansion & contraction.
Do you have to have the area cleared before putting them down? Can they be used on grassy areas? - I have just recently moved into a house and have some patio furniture, but don't have the time to put in a patio right now, so wondering if these can be used on grassy areas? »
Koch Architects, Inc. Joanne Koch Yes, the Bison Deck Tiles need to be installed over a solid substrate, we installed these over concrete. They need to "float" above the sloped draining surface on their adjustable "feet" so that they have ventilation on both top and bottom.

Was the peak on the left side of the roof added to mimic the peak of Mt Tam and Sausalito? - It is the quietest, most spectacular piece of the view. Brava! »
Courtyards are almost always paved in stone or gravel, but this one uses interlocking wood deck pavers. Using wood instead of stone is appropriate to the scale of a courtyard bound by one-story walls. Like the introductory image, the living space is centrally located and opens to the landscape, but the overall composition is informal for this home. The courtyard house plan integrates the use and relationship of the exterior with the functions of the interior, and allows light and air flow into all primary interior spaces as the house itself creates the landscape.More: The L-Shaped House PlanThe Dogtrot House PlanLiving La Vida Linear The U-Shaped House
3. What deck material is best for you? If your deck is to be built at grade or on top of a roof, think about whether you will need access to the space below the deck in the future. The deck in the picture is built from modular panels that can be removed for access to the space below. If building over a roof or patio with a slight pitch, adjustable deck supports such as those from Bison can make leveling the deck much easier.
