Luckily, our climate here in San Diego is very mild, so solar orientation is not as critical as other areas may be. If you desired more shade, you could always go over the top beams with smaller slats in the other direction that would provide much more shade cover.

The clearance requirements apply only to gas firepits, as shown above, not wood burning.

Wood burning firepits must be used with a spark screen or spark arrestor and are not for use under combustible construction, according to NFPA.

Also, in multi-family construction (townhouses, apartments, condos), ANY open flame must be at least ten feet from combustible construction.
