what type of wood was used on counter? How does this hold up with getting wet, etc? »
The wood on this island is walnut. It is not the most durable counter material out there but it is perfect for the right family. If you are looking for durability you may want to check out more stone options vs wood.

Martha O'Hara Interiors Hi allmanjoy! The tile for the back splash was recently discontinued. They are many great alternatives out there if you go to a local tile showroom!

Thank you for taking the time to verify the size for the kitchen.
Do you know/have the approximate size of the hearth room? Thank you again
did you use Benjamin Moore White dove on trim, cabinets and ceiling? - I wasn't sure if you answered this question when you said the painting was all done at the same time? thanks for clarifying for me.
Jody Truitt - »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Hi Jody! Sorry we misunderstood your question. The trim color, cabinet color, and ceiling colors is all Benjamin Moore White Dove! Sorry for the confusion.
is the ceiling paint color the same as cabinets and trim BM white dove? - wanted to know if you paint the ceiling the same color as the cabinets and trim? »

Martha O'Hara Interiors Thank you for your inquiry! Yes the room is 24' X 14' without the breakfast nook. The refrigerator and freezer are to the right of the island based on this photo. They are 4.5' x 6.75'.

Thickness of walnut island top? - You have answered so many questions. Thank you. I have one more. What is the thickness of the walnut island top? Beautiful kitchen! »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your inquiry! The tile is Wexford 17601(item number) by Jeffery Court Chapter 17 in Irish Ice (color) with grout color H152 white (brand Hydroment). But we are sorry to let you know that the Jeffery Court Chapter 17 has been discontinued.
Are you sure the ceiling height is not 9' instead of 10'? - Going off you measurements of three feet counter height plus three feet to vent hood plus 16"trim above cabinets, I am sure looking at the pic that there can't be more than 16"to 20"between vent and trimwork, at least not 32". I'm trying to fit this basic design on a 10'wall but it's just not working out good. Is it possible the ceiling is 9'? »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thank you for your inquiry! We have just remeasure the room and the measurements are as followed:
The floor to the top of the counters: 3'
The top of the range to the vent hood: 3'
Vent hood to top of trim: 3'
Top of trim to Crown molding is: about 1'
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thank you for your inquiry! These stools are available through Martha O'Hara Interiors. Please contact us directly and we would be happy to give you more information!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thank you for your inquiry! This walnut surface is not super durable. The finish that is on it is the same as walnut cabinets. If you are looking for a more durable option while still getting the same look we would suggest a walnut butcher block island.
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thank you for your question! The over all size of the space is 24' x 24'. The room is approximately divided in half. Half for the sitting room and Half for the kitchen area. The dimensions of the nook are 10' x 13'.
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thank you for your inquiry!
These light fixtures are available through Martha O'Hara Interiors please contact us directly if you are interested in purchasing, or have any further questions!
laurahp13 Do you have any advice on how far apart pendants should be from each other when hung over an island. Also, how high should they hang above the island? Thank you.

The most beautiful kitchen ever! - I am about to choose cabinets and was looking at doing something that looks just like this. How much difference do you think there is between this color (Dove White) and a bright white (Linen)? Do you think this same look can be acheived? »

Freda Valentine We have decided to buy some beautiful tiles from Porcelanosa, Spain. They should complement our silver and dark grey kitchen units. The mosaics for under the worktops are to be glass ones in varios shades of silver. Once finished I will post an image of the kitchen.

Were these cabinets professionally sprayed? How many coats to achieve this look? Was there any top coat? - Were these cabinets professionally sprayed? How many coats to achieve this look? Was there any top coat applied to make the finish more durable or just the paint in satin? Thank you for your response. »
neitz Could you please share the Benjamin Moore white? Super white, Decorator's white, white? I'm having trouble choosing. Thx for sharing "satin" finish. That helps with that selection
Is the surrounding wall color a flat or satin finish? - Your work is truly inspiring! I love the cabinets in the OC-17 Satin Enamel. I'm curious if you used a latex satin or flat on the surrounding walls? (I realize they are not pictured) Thanks for your help. »
Water/lemonade dispenser with glasses - Great kitchen! I love the strong mix of light and dark. Where did you find the dispenser. Most I have found are too big. »

Jeffrey Court has stopped production! Can you recommend an alternative for splash for this kitchen? - The Jeffery Court factory is closing production. I was immulating this gorgeous kitchen in my TX home. It is almost done but I cannot get this backsplash (missed the cut off by 4 days!!). What is a suitable substitute? Ann Sacks Element in smoke crackle? Walker Zanger in Pipe Smoke? Help please. »
Kathleen Vickers I ended up with Walker Zanger as well. Tuileries in Breton Beige. Perfect color but limited supplies, so I'm using a 2 3/8 x 7 1/2 'brique' field and 6 x 5 "Vendome" deco in a 2' x 3' panel behind the range. The quatrefoil design in the Vendome deco matches a quatrefoil design in the iron balusters in a nearby stairway, so it works.
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your interest! No, it is a different sitting area. This sofa is available through Martha O’Hara Interiors. Please contact us directly and we will be happy to give you more information. Best!
My mosaic tile table had a mosaic picture of 14 inches by 14 inches and - I need to replace it. Do you carry any tile pictures already made up that would be sized 14 inches by 14 inches? »
colour name for backsplash tile? - Martha, love all your homes! I live in Canada & while I can source the Jeffrey Court Irish Ice tile from a Toronto dealer I need the colour name?
Is it "wexford? The Jeffrey Court offices in California suggested that this was the colour after reviewing the Houzz picture.... it would be wonderful if you could confirm this. Thanks so much! »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your inquiry! Yes it is Wexford 17601(item number) by Jeffery Court Chapter 17 in Irish Ice (color) with grout color H152 white (brand Hydroment). Best of luck!
What about an island to seat eight? - Hi Martha,
I love this beautiful kitchen. I am considering something similar but would like to seat 8. What would you think about putting 2 additonal stools on each side of the island? I realize that I'd need to increase the depth of the island to about 5.5 feet. My kitchen can support this but is there such thing as an island that is too big? What are your thoughts? Thanks! »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thank you for your Inquiry! I think that that would work great! Just make sure to build in the overhang to accommodate the end stools. Best of luck!
SINK - what color and type of sink is in the island? - I have a similar color scheme and wanted to re-do the sink. Wondering what you used here. Absolutely gorgeous! »
Opening on Island - Hello! This is one of my favorite kitchens, just beautiful! Can you please tell me how large the open area is where the stools are tucked into? I saw the overall island is 12'-0" but not sure how large the columns are on the sides to figure out the open area. Thank you! »
Martha!! What stain did they use?? - I want to hire you! Where do I find you? i am a single guy that is building a big beautiful home...need lots of help. I am buying a custom black walnut wood island top like this you made. But they can't get the stain color right? They are sooo confused. Any help? »
bvo1bvo1 Hey Martha. Thanks for the response. I' m still learning this Houzz thing! I think I finally got them to give me a good stain color. I am not sure why they had to show me tan and black first??...but they finally got it close.
Where are you out of? Are you anywhere near Raleigh?
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your interest! The barstools are available through Martha O’Hara Interiors. Please contact us directly and we will be happy to give you more information. Best!
btenhove Hi Martha! Can you confirm that the colour of the Irish Ice tile by Jeffrey Court is "Wexford".
I live in Canada & have been able to source it from a distributor in Toronto... just want to get this exact colour & H152 is not a code they recognize.
Thanks!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your inquiry! Yes it is Wexford 17601(item number) by Jeffery Court Chapter 17 in Irish Ice (color) with grout color H152 white (brand Hydroment). Best of luck!
Custom color on pendants? - I purchased these same pendants from an online vendor. They aren't white like the ones in this picture, but more of a beige. Did you do a custom color on your pendants? This is my favorite room on Houzz and I was hoping to go for a similar look in my new house. Thanks so much for your time! »
Designer Fabric Outlet I looked around for you too. The only ones I can find with the scallop shape are the Regina ones. hopefully Martha can help you out! Good luck!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Hi Paige, This is available through Martha O’Hara Interiors. Please contact us directly and we will be happy to give you more information about the pendants. Best!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your inquiry! The hood is about 8' wide, 2'5" deep and from the counter top to the top of the hood is about 3'. Best of luck!
We don't have any control over removing comments unless it's a comment that we posted ourselves. If something was removed, it may have been done by the houzzer who posted it in the first place, or the comment you're thinking of may be connected with a different question about the bar stools in this image - we get lots of them!
Eggleston Farkas Architects Rather than being milled from a single piece of wood, engineered wood floors are made of several pieces laminated together. There is a top "wear layer" of the wood you see, with a backing layer (usually plywood) beneath. Because the backing plywood has alternating grain directions, engineered floors are usually more dimensionally stable relative to changes in humidity and temperature, and therefore are usually recommended for use over radiant floors. There is a wide variety of quality differences between different manufacturers, so it's wise to look at actual samples before ordering. Keep an eye out for how thick the wear layer is (thicker is better - you can sand & refinish more times), and the quality and thickness of the backing.

kitchen1 Lovely kitchen. Is there any glaze on the cabinets? I am debating doing a butterscotch (orange) or hazelnut (brown) glaze, but am worried about making the wrong choice. Do you have a opinion to share in regard to glaze or not to glaze? :) Thank you!
Ceiling paint - Beautiful kitchen. We are using Calcutta marbe backsplash and were thinking of white dove for cabinets, trim and ceiling. We painted the ceiling first and it looks yellow compares to our pot lights, what color did you paint the ceiling?
Thanks! »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your interest. These pendants are available through Martha O'Hara Interiors. If you would like to send us an email, we would be happy to get you dimension and pricing information.
bithy I just bought 4 stool that look just like these for $159 ea from Grandin Road. The leather is available in lots of colors. I got the dark brown and luv them!
What surface is island countertop .. Donyou have full pic of the gray couch - Love the contrast counter top.. On islan.. Need to know what it is ..the bar stools what material finall grey couch.. Although not a full picture it really captures essence of what I want to get across to my wife. And her design person .. Great lookin stuff »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your interest! The wood type on the island is walnut and the counter top is carrera marble. A wood island-top will be higher-maintenance than some other products. You have to consider scratching and liquid stains, both of which are potential hazards with a wood top.
One of the reasons this kitchen is so dramatic is because it includes this striking organic element, which would be impractical for many homeowners, but which was both appropriate and desirable for this particular couple.
There are multiple solutions and choices for durable counter tops that look great. Alternatives to wood might include granite, silestone or quarts depending on the look you're after.
Does the higher edge on the island make it taller than the standard 36" - I am thinking of making a thicker edge on my island, which used granite. However, I am short and am concerned that this will make it too tall for actually using it for cooking and prep. I get so involved with design that I forget it's really got to function too! »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks so much for your interest! We worked with Charles Cudd de Novo on this home build, and they would be able to answer your question. Here is their contact information: www.charlescudd.com. Best of luck!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thank you for your question! The kitchen island for this project is about 12' long by 4' wide. The walk space between the island and range are 49" wide. Best!

Soffit - Hi Martha,
beautiful inspiring kitchen. Just wondering if you would tell me the height of the soffit? (this is from the top of the cabinets to the ceiling, right?). Also, I read in your previous answers that the ceiling height was 10' in one answer and 106" in another. In a 10 foot ceiling is there a maximum allowable soffit height that would be aesthetically acceptable? Just so I get an idea of the overall impression, would you kindly confirm the height of the kitchen ceiling? »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for the question! These custom stools are available through Martha O'Hara Interiors. Please contact us directly at design@oharainteriors.com and we will be happy to provide you with more information about them. Best!
Is there a glaze on these cabinets? If so, what color is the glaze? - I am rennovating and in my kitchen I am doing grayish/taupish concrete floors, Ben Moore dove white cabinets, and a very dark gray (almost black) granite. We will have stainless steel appliances. I am stumped over what color glaze to use! Gray, cocoa, pewter??? I LOVE this kitchen and any help will be extremely helpful! Thank you! You're amazing by the way! »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for the question! the cabinets in this kitchen are Benjamin Moore Dove White with a satin finish. Best of luck and thank you for your kind words. Best!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for the question! For a kitchen, the standard distance between a counter top and pendent is between 30" and 36" depending on the size and scale of the lighting fixture. Best of luck!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thank you for your interest in this kitchen! This is one of a couple of angles we have on this website. Is there a question about the other side of the kitchen that we can answer or describe for you? Best!
Martha O'Hara Interiors These canisters are available through Martha O'Hara Interiors. Please contact us directly at design@oharainteriors.com and we will be happy to get you more information for you. Best!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for the question! We used 5" oak floors with a high-gloss ebony stain. The stool upholstery in this photo is a rich dark brown leather. Best!
I want to re-paint my birch kitchen cabinets. Originally they were the med brown birch color. Last summer, I painted them black. My kitchen is small. I think the black makes it look smaller. I would like to re-paint it some form of ivory or antique white. I want to change the floor too. Any advice? I'm open for any suggestions. I'm trying to make the room feel more open and bigger.
Martha O'Hara Interiors The right paint and trim colors always make a space feel larger and more bright. If you are interested in changing the cabinet color to a white or off white we love the color White Dove by Benjamin Moore. Best of luck!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thank you so much for your interest in our designs! We do work on projects out of state depending on what you would like done and where you are located. If you are interested in any of our design services please feel welcome to contact us at design@oharainteriors.com and we will be happy to discuss your project with you. Best!
Island Top - Nothing else will give you the look or feel of wood. Wood tops are completely food safe, butchers and professional chefs have been using wood chopping blocks for hundreds of years. Check out www.engraintops.com »
Gorgeous kitchen - suggestions for different island top material? - I'd like a similar look for my island but would prefer a more durable material for the island as we will be eating and doing food prep on it. can you suggest a different material that will give it the same amazing effect? would black be too harsh? »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your question! There are multiple solutions and choices for durable counter tops that look great. For this kitchen we chose to go with a dark wooden surface to compliment the dark wood floors and stools. Alternatives may include granite, silestone, or quarts depending on the look you're wanting. Best!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your interest! The backsplash in this photograph is a ceramic tile and the color is Irish Ice. It is available through Martha O'Hara Interiors. Please contact us directly at design@oharainteriors.com and we will be happy to give you more information. Best!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thank you for your interest! Typically any wood surface is vulnerable to damage or distress. The wooden island top in the image above didn't interfere with our client's lifestyle. However, this solution may not be for everyone.
When deciding on materials for a kitchen we suggest thinking about what you will be using the surface for. For instance, display and entertaining vs eating and food preparation. I hope that helps you with your question. Best!
t - my kitchen has a column within it. the measure of the kitchen has 363cm length and the column is at the middle and 131cm depth. the kitchen can have a size of 363x250 and it has a door to passio at the end right of it. i don't know how to make it. »
Martha O'Hara Interiors It's a bit tricky to help you out without seeing a blueprint. If you try posting this question to the discussion boards with an attachment of your current floor plan, we (and the greater Houzz community) will be able to help you with this dilemma.
So sorry that we can't say more right now, but I'd hate to steer you in the wrong direction.
ppablo55 Hello Martha,
We are about to renovate our kitchen and we have a "small challenge"...
The kitchen is an "L" shape - 17" by 10", ceiling high on the 17" side is 97" and 51 feet before the wall is finish and create the L - the ceiling drop to 81"....
the high of the ceiling on the 10" side is 81" all the way.
we are planning to put top cabinets all the way on the 17" side BUT we dont know how and what to put on the 51 feet when the ceiling is drop, so everything would looks right... - ANY IDEA?...
also, on the 10" side, we dont planning to put any top cabinets and all this wall will be a big window to the backyard. - Should we add some cabinets on the sides? even if the ceiling is low?...
Martha O'Hara Interiors Hi Pablo. Thanks for your questions - it sounds like a solvable challenge. We would love to help you out, but without your current floor plan, I would hesitate to tell you what to do. If you would like to contact me directly, we can continue this conversation.
Just want to say that you rock for answering all the questions. Oh and this is my favorite kitchen on Houzz! - So many questions go unanswered on Houzz...Martha, you're awesome for answering all of them! I love this kitchen - GORGEOUS! You are so talented! »
Pricing - I am remodeling a house and want to copy this kitchen. I am not sure if you throw out ball park prices over the web, but I am working out my budget and was wondering about how much the just cabinets and island cabinets would run. »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thank you for your interest! Cabinetry pricing varies significantly depending on the materials used and the level of customization.
This kitchen and its cabinetry was completely custom-designed and hand-made. I invite you to contact us directly so that we can learn about what you're after in order to give you more specific pricing guidelines. Best of luck with your project!

La Pietra Marble, Inc. Hello,
Carrara is actually a very dense and sound marble. That is why its used so much as an architectural stone. The little white marks that you may find on carrara marble are called tension marks. Here at La Pietra marble we are doing more and more carrara kitchens. We recommend sealing the marble with the dry treat sealer, its by far the best sealer out there. I hope this helps.
Martha O'Hara Interiors We agree with the experts - if your marble has "filler spots" (different from tension marks!), it may be a quality issue with that particular slab. Best!

Dimensions of the kitchen and clearances - Hi - this is a gorgeous kitchen and roughly the same layout we're thinking of yet for a smaller scale. Do you think this kitchen layout would work for four adults and four children if scaled back to 17-18' x 14'? We plan to have the kitchen to the front of the house at the east facing corner (windows to both northeast and east) off the entrance (where you have the sofa in the picture) and with an opening to dining room (to the right of the photo). My other question is: if we have the same layout, how big could the island be in our case and how much should we allow for clearance between counters and island? Thank you in advance - I really like your work! »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Yes, this could work. With 8 people in the home hall clearance may be more important than a large island. We suggest allowing at least 3' to 4' clearance between the counter cabinets and center island. Based on your description we believe you could still end up with a 8' by 5' or 9' by 5' kitchen island. Best of luck!
Martha O'Hara Interiors In this space, we used Tile X Design's Jeffrey Court Collection in Crackle Grey. The bricks are 3"x6", the border tiles are 2.25"x12", and the diamonds are 2"x2". Best!

Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for the question. The color of the cabinets are Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17. The walls are tiled in this photo, but in other places in the kitchen they are painted with Ben Moore's 861 Shale. Best of luck!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your interest! The pulls are available through Martha O’Hara Interiors. Please contact us directly and we will be happy to give you more information. Best!
ebie1 We are doing a similar size island 12' wide x 4.5' deep and putting wall cabinets on the seating side for extra storage underneath, but cannot decide between a 15" deep cabinet and 15" deep overhang or 12" deep cabinet and 18" overhang? Any recommendation would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!
njorgensen Hello Martha, What are the approximate dimensions of your kitchen. I plan an adddition that is fairly flexible in size at the moment. We are planning three stools at an island so I have some reference but would love to achieve a similar look and feel. Nancy
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your inquiry! The wall that the range oven is on is 23.5' long. Hope that gives you a relational perspective on how large that island is! Best of Luck!
Would this beautiful kitchen work with old maple (yellow hued) floors? - I am remodeling my kitchen and want a look similar to this, but currently have vintage natural maple floors (with a yellow hue). Would the floor look OK with this design? If not, would it be OK to change the floor even though the kitchen meets up with the family room which is also in vintage natural maple. I probably wouldn't change the family room floor color, but could use area rugs to perhaps balance things out. »
Anne DeCocco I think your old floors would bring a beautiful, natural patina to this look. Rarely have I seen a wood floor that really has to go. I love 'em.
Martha O'Hara Interiors We would suggest to change the wood countertop to a maple as well, if you are going with a design like the one in this picture, that way it will tie in with the floors, and also be very careful in choosing a white. Sometimes maple and white don't mix well, but it all depends on the color of the maple, if it is more yellow we would suggest to stay away from white, if it is a blonder maple then just be careful in choosing a white paint. Hope this helps!!!
Cabinet/crown options - I am remodeling an existing kitchen. My cabinets are natural maple. The designer wants to add a thick crown molding in white above my existing maple cabinets to take them to the ceiling (similar to the thick crown I. This kitchen photo). The Crown would also be added around the kitchen. Will it look good to mix white with Maple???? I am a little worried :-/ »
tracianderson Thanks! My designer feels the same... does not like open space above cabinets!! She is VERY good. But, has not done this before...... she says it will just look like a soffit.
Joni Koenig Interiors The soffit in the photo you are using as reference is lovely. What we can't see are your existing cabinet fronts. The moulding is very clean and looks very current. The kitchen cabinets and crown need to be married. I think it can look like a soffit. Keep it more vertical with little projection.
Amy's Affordable Interiors I've had 4 different types of granite in 3 homes; Uba Tuba, Peacock Verde, Kashmir, and Exotic Delicatus. The first two are very dark, almost black, the latter two, quite light with lots of white. Pros and cons? I cannot think of one single con to any granite I've ever had, or a pro/con debate regarding light or dark varieties. I've noticed on my Peacock Verde and Uba Tuba that, if looking very closely, you *may* notice water spots (that wipe off in a second), while I never notice water spots on the lighter kinds. The Kashmir is interesting. It's in my children's bathroom, and they splash a lot. If the counter gets very wet, that spot will get temporarily darker. It's kind of neat-looking actually. Within 5 minutes, it's back to normal.
tennisgran I've had black granite and both my husband and myself found if hard to keep clean. I had to buy granite cleaner to use on it daily in order to eliminate any streaking.
Going to build a new home and the first thing we agreed on was not to do black granite.
What is the ceiling height? - Is it 10 feet? We LOVE this kitchen and are doing something similar but am not sure what to do over the small upper cabinets since we have 10 foot ceilings. Thanks! »
Martha O'Hara Interiors If you're looking for a similar stool, certainly many online retailers will have options available. However, the stools in the image above are custom made and not available through Pottery Barn - I'd hate for someone to order one thing, expecting another!
seufer Thanks Martha. It's beautiful, I'd love to use wood on my island, but I cook and entertain all the time. I've heard that wood isn't practical for a heavily used kitchens, has that been your experience?
Martha O'Hara Interiors Your concerns are not misplaced. If you look at our responses to previous questions about the wood-top island in this image, I believe you'll find the information that you're looking for. Best of luck!
This is the first time I've seen operable doors on a hearth-style range hood. I haven't seen this done anywhere else. Any tips or suggestions that you can offer? »
Susan Brook Interiors I do this on most of my kitchens to utilize dead space, the storage can be full depth (normally 15-inches) or you can use shallow storage, around 4-inches for spices and then use the space behind as open shelves accessible from inside the open sides of the hood. I have attached a photo of a kitchen hood...hope it helps! Thanks Susan Brook
Martha O'Hara Interiors This is something we do in most of our kitchen designs. It's a great way to maximize storage space and to create convenient access to the things you need when you're cooking.
Typically, we recommend using closed cabinetry in favor of open shelving - this will help you maintain a neat look. In fact, we've gone so far as to create custom cabinetry for appliances in order to maintain the cleanest possible counter-tops. Ultimately, any choice you make needs to fit your day-to-day lifestyle.
Beautiful design! Can you tell me what material/color the white countertops are and are there any other more durable options for a brown island counter? »
foreverhouse I'm almost done getting my kitchen redone..I love carrera..really any marble with grey veining. I couldn't get the marble because my family is pretty much all men and my mom who would forget to be a little careful..Truthfully, I didn't want to be stressed about it..I went with Antartide Quartzite..It's not a man made product like Caesarstone or Zodiac..It's a natural stone..Mine has crystals in it ..It is absolutely beautiful and gives the feeling of marble...Mine has been resined..Some people say it can etch only because of the resin but I threw everything at mine when it didn't even have the sealer on and nothing stained it except for red wine..I was able to get it out with my mixture of hydrogen peroxide and windex..don't laugh! I am going to get it sealed so that won't even be a problem with the wine after that's done..It's a hard stone to find but it's worth checking out..
The wood top you can have made by the amish..They put a finish on it that resists most any stains, water, nail polish..I have furniture made by them all the time and I know they do cabinets and countertops..Do a search on the internet..I have used four different amish furniture companies and they are perfect in every way and solid wood..You wouldn't even have to use Waterlox which most kitchen places use on their wood countertops..It's bulletproof..Good luck!

Hello! For the 4 "legs" of the island, are there any drawers built into the front side facing the range, specially on the "legs"? Hope that makes since. »
Martha O'Hara Interiors There is storage built into the entire island - drawers and cabinets along it's long side, shelving along the two shorter sides. I've attached some images to give you a sense of what I mean. Thanks!
Lilacjo I investigated what the tiles were and found out the specifics. This is from a tile person here in Boston:: "The backsplash is from the Jeffrey Court Collection "Irish Ice" Chapter 17..the color is Wexford....the 2x2's in the picture are actually sheet mounted square, but installed on the diagonal." I love the look and considered this for my new kitchen. In person they are much more grey and would not work with the countertop I am using. I am glad to pass along the information I found out. I love Houzz just for this reason!
Martha O'Hara Interiors Yes. Everything in the image is functional, rather than for show. In fact, the molding withing the entryway on the right of the photo, when pressed, will release additional shelving that literally rolls out of the wall.
Martha O'Hara Interiors Hi chrishone! Thank you for your kind words! This center island was all done by a custom cabinetry company. We were not involved in selections during this stage of the project. If you show this picture to a local cabinetry company they should be able to help you replicate something like this!
Can you please provide the dimensions of the overall back splash behind the cooktop as well as the dimensions of the frame-out? The scale looks great and would like to incorporate into my existing space. Thanks! »
Martha O'Hara Interiors Thanks for your inquiry! This cabinetry hardware is from Nob Hill, we used A726-4-PN 4" pull and MI309 for the knobs all in a polished nickel finish. Best of luck!
Do you know exactly what collection of Jeffrey Court tile was used on the backspalsh of the "A Cooks Paradise" kitchens? I cant seem to locate it. Thanks in advance. »

Martha O'Hara Interiors I asked the designers on the project about this. Their response was that this sort of counter-top is certainly going to be a higher-maintenance material. You have to consider scratching and liquid stains, both of which are potential hazards with a wood top.
One of the reasons this kitchen is so dramatic is because it includes this striking organic element, which would be impractical for many homeowners, but which was both appropriate and desirable for this particular couple.

Beautiful cabinetry!! Is it overlay built to appear inset, or flush inset cabinetry? Also, it's hard to tell from the pic, but are the doorframes beaded? It's all absolutely stunning. »
erin99 Martha - you are a talented designer. What height are the tallest cabinet doors in this kitchen. I know the crown is 16 inches and the ceiling here is 10 feet. My kitchen will be 8'8" and I am wondering if I should take the cabinets to the ceiling or have a larger crown moulding. What is the tallest cabinet door you would recommend in determining the heights to use?
kmhbt Oh how I wish you lived in my area! I sure do need help with my kitchen. I would like to mimic this look and am thinking that I should choose between these two doors. Any advice from anyone would be so very, very appreciated.

We used White dove for kitchen cabinets - do you know if we could use this color as an exterior white to paint - We are building a new house - wood siding on top floor and brick to be painted white on the bottom - do you have a recommendation for a brand / color of exterior white paint that would not be too stark - would the BM white dove work for exterior? We are in California -
thanks so much, »
Need help with kitchen - We have been searching for a more custom look on the hood or mantle above the stove. The long curved mantle/hood in the photo appears to be custom made. Was it hand crafted by a carpenter or was it ordered by a vender? Thank you. »
Can a smooth cooktop work with this island? - I am hoping to emulate this beautiful kitchen you designed into a home I am buying. Presently, the cooktop is in the island. I would like to know if it is advisable to have a cooktop with a wood countertop? I am trying to not move things around to save $$.
One more question, would it look bad if I put a rug under the chairs that sit at the island to protect the wood floors? »
Take photos at a time of day when you have the best natural light in the most important rooms of the house, such as the living room, the kitchen and the master bedroom. Make sure you open every window covering and even doors to let more light in. Don't use a flash if you don't have to — it will distort colors and appear harsh.

The wood on this island is walnut. It is not the most durable counter material out there but it is perfect for the right family. If you are looking for durability you may want to check out more stone options vs wood.
Best of luck in your search!
