German-style Bank Barn Conversion

This project salvages a historic German-style bank barn that fell into serious decay and readapts it into a private family entertainment space. The barn had to be straightened, stabilized, and moved to a new location off the road as required by local zoning. Design plans maintain the integrity of the bank barn and reuses lumber. The traditional details juxtapose modern amenities including two bedrooms, two loft-style dayrooms, a large kitchen for entertaining, dining room, and family room with stone fireplace. Finishes are exposed throughout. A highlight is a two-level porch: one covered, one screened. The backside of the barn provides privacy and the perfect place to relax and enjoy full, unobstructed views of the property.

Give a color a second chance.For the longest time, I was convinced that I did not like red in interiors. I must have seen a few really hideous or overdone examples of red that put me off it completely. But now I really appreciate it. For instance, the clear tomato red of these cabinets brightens up the rustic wood in this open-plan kitchen. If you have written off a color entirely, I am not saying you will necessarily ever love it, but you never know. Keep an open mind and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Warm, Rich Kitchen PaletteThis kitchen makes me want to eat! And definitely drink some wine. The color red is said to be an appetite stimulant, which is why most fine dining establishments are painted shades of red rather than, say, green or blue. Red can be tricky to work with, though, because it tends to suck all the light from a room. Instead of painting your walls red, try using red in smaller chunks, such as the red range featured in an earlier kitchen, or as used here, in these beautiful cranberry-red cabinets.
