Anne DeCocco This combo can be used in traditional homes very comfortably. It provides lovely contrast and highlights all the features of this staircase. Handrails certainly can be painted--it's easy, just use a very scrubbable finish (gloss or high gloss). However, stained railings are easier to keep clean and fresh over time.
