A nautical collage adorns the wall as you emerge into the light and airy loft space. Family photos and heirlooms were combined with traditional nautical elements to create a collage with emotional connection. Behind the white flowing curtains are built in beds each adorned with a nautical reading light and built-in hideaway niches. The space is light and airy with painted gray floors, all white walls, old rustic beams and headers, wood paneling, tongue and groove ceilings, dormers, vintage rattan furniture, mid-century painted pieces, and a cool hangout spot for the kids.

Width of stairs - We are considering an attic renovation and my husband is concerned the existing stairs are too narrow. What's the minimum stair width we could get by with? Ours are 30". Any comments or ideas? Thanks. »
Love everything about this. - Is there anywhere I can see and or purchase the floor plans? Does it have a third floor? Master downstairs? We just purchased a lot on a lake and are looking to build next year. »
The loft area upstairs is completely open, which not only creates a communal space but also saved money on framing. "This home isn't about walls and constraints; it's about being communal and together as a family," says Joel. Instead of walls, curtains from Pottery Barn were hung from iron curtain rods with rope. The flooring material in the loft is painted porch-grade hardwood, which also cut down on cost.
Thwart the difficult mission of finding the perfect-size piece to fill a narrow stairwell by grouping together an eclectic array of framed art and mirrors. The placement around this doorway is balanced but not perfectly symmetrical, lending a casual feel.
Notice the rope and canvas curtains. These, along with a few vintage beach-theme trinkets and mirrors shaped like portholes, achieve perfect modern nautical balance.
Layer the whites. Keep layering on the whites in your beach cottage, using different shades for depth. Tiny sample cans of paint are perfect for experimenting to find just the right ones. After the paint is up, work in white window treatments and furniture for yet another layer. Then have some fun with the accents.
4. NauticalA popular theme with good reason, nautical style manages to be both classic and fresh — as long as it is approached without too heavy a hand. Keep the nautical look current by steering clear of too many dark woods and an excess of decorative items. You can't go wrong with a crisp, clean color palette of white and blue with bright red accents.
