Designer, Joel Snayd. Beach house on Tybee Island in Savannah, GA. This two-story beach house was designed from the ground up by Rethink Design Studio -- architecture + interior design. The first floor living space is wide open allowing for large family gatherings. Old recycled beams were brought into the space to create interest and create natural divisions between the living, dining and kitchen. The crisp white butt joint paneling was offset using the cool gray slate tile below foot. The stairs and cabinets were painted a soft gray, roughly two shades lighter than the floor, and then topped off with a Carerra honed marble. Apple red stools, quirky art, and fun colored bowls add a bit of whimsy and fun.
This is what I call California casual. White walls with beadboard on the ceiling, an open layout and wicker chairs all beckon for lazy days with flip-flops left at the door.
Create durability in a beach house. It's easy to clean and will stand up against gritty sand and dirty feet. Sleek rectangular tiles in a cool gray hue work with the whitewashed walls and ceilings in this beach house to create a carefree mood.
Choosing themed art. Artwork is a great way to tell a story in your home, building on the other elements and really bringing your theme to life. Just remember to choose art because you love it, not only because it fits your theme. Usually this means taking your time and allowing your collection to grow organically over time.Tell us: Weigh in on themes in decorating. Do you love them, or do they make you cringe?
