Michael Robert Construction Thank you! The flooring is 4" oak planks, #2, with 4 coats of water based poly. We went with the #2 (actually the third most "desirable" grade) intentionally so that we would have the variation in color and the natural knots for visual interest. The water-based poly gives the floor a lighter, whiter look. I didn't want the yellow or red tones to come through as they do with an oil based poly.
Thank you in advance for your expertise! Would a creamier white cabinet work in this space too? I - I would like to use a cool grey/ white granite called Supreme White, aka Fantasy White, aka White Zito. my cabinet color is more like Farrow and Balls Winborne white though and now I am worried that Cabinets are not white enough to blend nicely with such a granite that sort of resembles marble. Any advice for me? thanks again! »
Michael Robert Construction Hi Gail! I felt that the coolness in our carrara did not go well with an off white cabinet. The bright white complements the marble much better. Had we gone with a calacatta or other white marble, an off white cabinet would have been fine.
It's hard for me to say for sure without seeing your granite, but try to get large samples of the stone and bring it home to your cabinets. Make sure te sample is from the same lot as the one you are considering, though, since the colors can vary greatly from lot to lot.
Ironically, all the trim in our house is painted f&b's winborne white! Including in the kitchen. Good luck with your project! Let me know if I can help in any other way.
LOVE! - I can't stop looking at your pictures, your house is just stunning and layed out so well. I'm jealous of your little bar and computer areas! Now for the kitchen- it's my inspiration kitchen and I have so many questions!
Are the cabinets white white?
We are doing a white kitchen and blue island and I'm not sure what to do with the backsplash. I love how your white subway tiles look, did you consider any other types of backsplash?
Our kitchen will backup to our family room also, which we have a light brown couch, brown ottoman and dark wood TV unit. The room is much closer than yours- like 4 feet from the island. Do you think it will clash with the blue island? We'll keep the walls a light color to keep it all light.
How do you like your microwave drawer, especially with kids? We have a toddler and twins on the way.
I'm sure I'll have more questions as we go through our design- thanks so much for the inspiration! »
Michael Robert Construction Isn't Houzz the best?! What ever did people do before it? All those piles of torn magazine pages! Hundreds of dollars spent on magazines! :)
Thank you for your kind words about our kitchen. It truly is the heart of our home and it makes me happy every day. We're thrilled with all the choices we made, and it sounds like yours is going to be gorgeous too!
In terms of our backsplash, I chose a polished ceramic subway that is machine made, but crafted to look handmade. It was far less expensive than the handmade ones, and I actually preferred the slightly more consistent look of the machine made over the very rustic look of the handmade. If I were in your shoes, I would choose the polished subway. We have under cabinet lighting, and when it's on the way the light reflects off of the polished surface and slight unevenness of the tile is just beautiful. Gives a little sparkle to an otherwise pretty earthy kitchen.
Good luck with your project! Hope you post photos when you're finished! Let me know if I can help in any other way.
PoshHaus We love Houzz, and the eye opening chance to see products being used around the world that from our small town, farm living in New Hampshire would be hard to visualize.
For the mixture of colours - like the idea of mixing white with something darker in the kitchen. Could have a combination of colours in the kitchen for the doors?
