Cliff House - Front contemporary

Cliff House - Front

The ambition for Cliff House was to create a contemporary and evocative house which is an extension of the site. In order to wholly comprehend the surroundings, a thorough site analysis was undertaken. A 360 degree review was taken at several points throughout the site to explore view opportunities, solar access throughout the year, prevailing wind direction, and natural tree shading by season. The strengths, challenges and opportunities at each location were carefully documented. Finally, the site was photographed and experienced as a source of inspiration for colour palette, textures, shapes, materials, and atmosphere.

The property is unassuming as seen from the street, as it appears to be a simple clearing between two stands of trees along the neighbouring property lines. However, as you approach the site it begins to drop away in a series of granite platforms covered in salal and small bushes, revealing the edge of a north facing cliff with views across Garden Bay to a nearby mountain. Despite the relative proximity of the two neighbouring houses, the site has a remote and isolated feeling due to the location of trees and the way the triangular site opens up towards the cliff. The surrounding trees are dense and imposing in certain areas, and sparse in others, creating a sense of movement and excellent view opportunities.

The resulting design is welcoming and eye-catching at the street level. The form and experience as described in the project introduction, are inspired directly from the natural context of rock, trees, and sky.
