A series of prints from one artist always makes for a great collection.

Hanging at various heights, this grouping of lights works with the height in this stairwell, shedding light on the artwork at night, and giving great energy to what is an often overlooked space.

Think about descension as well as ascension. These beautiful works of art can be enjoyed from the second floor and going down the staircase. I'm sure one would notice different things about them during the descent, as what's at eye level changes on the way down.

Frames that are about the same width as elements in the wainscoting will also help create a connection between the two and pull the unique detailing of the paneling up the wall.

The stairway is another spot that can easily fade into the background. Make it pop by painting banister and spindle surfaces with opposing colors, such as the classic black and white. For the very daring, a bright pink, green, orange or blue is incredibly eye catching. On the flip side, if you aren't wild about the banister and spindles on your staircase, paint them the same color as the walls and watch them fade into the background.

Paneling that echoes the wainscoting on the walls gives this stairwell an architectural boost and emphasizes the thick moldings.

For people with seasonal affective disorder, getting a lot of light early in the morning can help reset their internal clock. One way to do this at home is to make sure the bedroom gets plenty of morning light with windows and skylights. But I imagine that once you get out of bed, a trip down light-filled stairs like these also would help jump-start your day.
