celiaramirez I am trying to replicate this at my home office. My cabinet maker just completed these built ins and the desk in this picture. I would like to try and match the color of stain but cannot find a good match. The wood that I used for the desk and shelves is alder wood. Can you tell me the type of wood used here and the custom stain combination that you used to get this color?
Desk - We are building a home with several built in desk areas. I do not want to use granite on all of them but my builder says the wood tops don't stand up. Please tell me what your experience has been with this desk. What is wood species? Stained with poly? »
Shannon Ggem ASID- Ggem Design Co LLC Wood desks are classic and any hardwood top will last you a very long time. Here's a link to one from 1450 made of Oak.
562 years is a good long life for a desk, I think! Any hardwood desk top will stand up to normal use for a very long time (soft woods like Pine will not do as great). Some classics used on desks are Rosewood, Mahogany and Oak. The furniture building experts on here will know more species, I'm sure.
I think your instinct is correct, that granite topped desks everywhere may look dated and it's more a question of taste than longevity- granite desks feel a bit 90's to me, it'd have to be done very carefully to keep it fresh and current.
Granite will last 1000s of years, but do you plan to be around to use it then? What kind of heavy use do you plan for your desks? If it's normal desk stuff, wood will be fine and look very classic and beautiful.
Love the rustic home office for Scott. The antler chair is a little too much. I'd rather use small antlers for drawer pulls, or just display one on a coffee table book.
