"Tricks of the Trade" for this layout - I love the abundance of cabinetry in this narrow kitchen. Would love to know some of the "tricks of the trade" you mention in another question that makes this work.. I have a similar floor plan but my kitchen is 11 1/2' so a few inches shy of this kitchen's width. What is the depth of the cabinets opposite the island? Does the island begin beyond the fridge? What is on the other side of the table - is that a pass through to another room and if so is the entry to the room behind the table? »
Laura Vlaming, CKD Hi Nehome,
"Tricks of the trade" do vary with each design dilemma. In this kitchen the base cabinets on the left, are shallower than the standard 24". The refrigerator is "counter depth" style (the only way this would work), and is located perpendicular to the traffic space in front of the range, to allow more room for the doors to open. The passageways here are at the minimum 36" from counter to counter, and 39", in front of the range, which worked for this homeowner, since it is a one-cook kitchen. More cooks require more space!
The cased opening on the left, goes to a hallway leading to the front door, living room and stairs. To the right of the table is a window, with a deep sill.
Hope that answers your questions, thanks for your interest!
I love the layout of this space. Do you have other photos of the space that you can share? - I'm in the process of looking for new design ideas for my own kitchen remodel. The floor plan of this space is exactly the same as my own. I love the whole design! ...especially the cabinetry opposite the table. I would have never thought of it!! It's a great use of an otherwise empty space. I would love to see photos from different vantage points. »
dkotov Thank you! My kitchen is 14x11 so I am debating whether to put a very small island in an U shape kitchen or make it L shape with a little bit longer island but I will be losing more cabinets on the left unless I make them not that deep but still the fridge is there.
Ron Will Management An L shape will give you a bit more of counter space; but perhaps you should consider an Island / butcher block on wheels it will complement the style of Kitchen you currently have.
When re-designing your kitchen you need to consider what is most important to you and go from there; it is a lot of things to consider when re-doing a layout so a consultation with a professional is always the best way to go.
Laura Vlaming, CKD These are Omega cabinets, and the stain finish is Cherry/Nutmeg. The floor matched the adjacent prefinished flooring, the homeowner had done a couple years ago in their living room/dining room...sorry, I don't have that spec info!
