This historic home and coach house in a landmark district on Astor Street was built in the late 1800’s. Originally designed as an 11,000sf single family residence, the home
was divided into nine apartments in the 1960’s and had fallen into disrepair. The new owners purchased the property with a vision to convert the building back to single
family residence for their young family.
The design concept was to restore the limestone exterior to its original state and reconstruct the interior into a home with an open floor plan and modern amenities for entertaining and family living, incorporating vintage details from the original property whenever possible. Program requirements included five bedrooms, all new bathrooms, contemporary kitchen, salon, library, billiards room with bar, home office, cinema, playroom, garage with stacking car lifts, and outdoor gardens with all new landscaping.
The home is unified by a grand staircase which is flooded with natural light from a glass laylight roof. The first level includes a formal entry with rich wood and marble finishes,
a walnut-paneled billiards room with custom bar, a play room, and a separate family entry with mudroom. A formal living and dining room with adjoining intimate salon are located on the second level; an addition at the rear of the home includes a custom deGiulio kitchen and family room. The third level master suite includes a marble bathroom, dressing room, library, and office. The fourth level includes the family bedrooms and a guest suite with a terrace and views of Lake Michigan. The lower level houses a custom cinema. Sustainable elements are seamlessly integrated throughout and include renewable materials, high-efficiency mechanicals and thermal envelope, restored original mahogany windows with new high-performance low-E glass, and a green roof.

dSPACE Studio Ltd Thank you for your interest in our work. This is a 3" wide board, rift and quartered white oak in a chevron pattern. The floors were stained with a custom stain blend that is 50% ebony with 50% chocolate with a polyurethane top coat for a long lasting and durable floor. Good luck with your project.

dSPACE Studio Ltd Hi, great question. The typical flooring for this house is a 4" wide board, rift and quartered white oak. However, at the chevron pattern in this hallway we used a 3" wide board. Thanks for your question and good luck with your project.

dSPACE Studio Ltd While we can't recommend a specific color for your home, we can give you some tips on paint selection. We highly recommend picking up paint cards from your local hardware store and bringing them home with you to look at in your Kitchen. It's very important to see the paint options in your space because the colors will change appearance under different lighting conditions (daylight vs. your home's lighting vs. the fluorescent lights at the hardware store). Once you've narrowed your selection down, many people will paint small swatches on the wall in a few color options to help make the final decision. Many paint companies now sell sample sizes for exactly this purpose, and Benjamin Moore allows you to order these samples directly from their website, shipped to your home. Thank you for the question and good luck with your project!

Amazing attention to detail throughout this house, love it! - I am simply curious about the detailing of the inlay "Herringbone" pattern. Is this hard to achieve? There doesn't seem to be any expansion required for the timber and a clean butt joint is also provided where the Herringbone sections meet the straight planks? »
Eutree Wide Plank Flooring This pattern does require the pieces to be cut to size and end matched. Typically sizes will run 12"-16" long. They will be need to be trimmed during installation depending on how the joints come together.
dSPACE Studio Ltd Thank you for the great question - Eutree is correct - there are some special techniques to achieving the herringbone or chevron flooring pattern but a qualified installer should be familiar with this floor pattern. Good Luck with your project!

Candice Phillips When you say the trim do you just mean base boards and crown moldings in semi gloss? Is the entire wall finished in matte with trim accents in semi gloss? So confused? I have an entire wall of wood and trim work that looks just like this and am worried they are going to paint the entire thing semi gloss and will be too shiny for this cathedral vaulted room??? SOS!!
