dSPACE Studio Ltd Hi, Great question. Our hardwood floor installer applied two coats of a custom stain blend that is 50% ebony with 50% chocolate applied onto a rift and quarter sawn white oak floor. We are unable to confirm the brand of stain as our floor finisher says he cant remember. The general concept is mixing 50% black with 50% brown to achieve the rich dark tone. I recommend having your floor finisher provide at least 3 stain samples for your review and approve. It is great to have the stain samples applied to the actual floor so that you can see the finish in the actual space. Thanks for your question and good luck with your project.

Stairs - I am thinking about doing this on the walls of our staircase and using black and white photos. Do you think this color is 2 dark for stairs? »
dSPACE Studio Ltd Shellie, Great question. The stairs in this house are stained the same dark color as the floors and we don't think it's too dark at all. However, in the stairway we went with a much lighter color for the walls. White walls can help brighten up a smaller space, especially a narrow or enclosed staircase. If your staircase is incorporated into a larger room, then a lighter wall color is less of a consideration. Thanks for your question and good luck with your project.

Loving these colors! - Can you share the name of the trim color? I'm looking to find a good wall color other than shaker beige to pair with the color mayonnaise for the trim. Thank you! »
dSPACE Studio Ltd Hi Ericka, great question. The trim color in this room is Hazy Skies, from Benjamin Moore and the wall color is Chelsea Grey also from Benjamin Moore. Thanks for your question and good luck with your project.

What do you think about this stain for pine? - We are renovating a 70's house with random width pine flooring. I like the color of this floor... Comments?? »
Eco Options Hardwood Pine is very hard to stain evenly using traditional pigmented solvent based stains. Ex minwax
Those floors are traditional style stained and finished. Like mentioned, samples are everything. If you find a seriously accomplished floor guy they can use alternative methods of coloring the wood.
Rubio Monocoat comes to mind. Looks very even when colored with RMC.
Here is a recent Rubio Monocoat jibe we did on pine.

Eco Options Hardwood The floor above looks to be stained with Kona. Lowes carries this traditional stain named ultimate kona.
It actually does fairly well with pine. Grab a piece of pine and try a sample for yourself.
dSPACE Studio Ltd The floors are rift & quarter sawn white oak with a custom blend dark stain. There is no brand or manufacturer as this is real wood, however the stain used is a custom blend that is 50% ebony with 50% chocolate applied to the floors in two coats. The final finish has a polyurethane coat for a long lasting and durable floor. Good luck with your project.

dSPACE Studio Ltd We typically recommend that doors and cased openings be consistent throughout a project for design continuity whenever possible. Sometimes our clients are limited by existing conditions (existing locations of beams or duct-work for example), in which case we try to keep doors consistent within an area or floor. For this project, the typical door height/cased opening is 8'-0". Thanks for your question and good luck with your project.

2 Trim Colors Listed - Two questions asked about trim color. dSPACE gave 2 different answers. One answer was BM Vanilla Milkshake, the other was BM Hazy Skies. May I know which one is correct? Thank you. »
dSPACE Studio Ltd The ceiling is also Hazy Skies, it only looks darker because it is in shadow in this photograph. Thank you for your question and good luck with your project!
dSPACE Studio Ltd Great Question, The left side of the hallway has three built-in wardrobes integrated into the wall panels. Good Luck with your Project!

This is beautiful and I love the baseboards and crown. - This looks so great, I have 10' ceiling and dont know if I could get away with this. Do you know the height of the ceilings in this hallway?
Thanks »
dSPACE Studio Ltd Hi, great question. All the trim, baseboards, crown and millwork on this project are custom designed by dSPACE Studio. You could take the photo from our project to your architect, designer, or millworker and ask them to create your own unique design. The baseboards are 12" tall and the crown is 8" tall. It should be reasonably easy and you can then say your project has a one-of-a-kind design element. Thanks for your question and good luck with your projects. dSPACE Studio's portfolio of award winning work can been seen at www.dspacestudio.com
joeblackkk I love the colors. I have seen hundreds of picture and I always return to yours.
I love your decorating style and color selection is truly 2nd to none.
If you may, with the redundancy of questions I am a little confused.
You have mention that the color of the Paint in the ceiling of this picture is Vanilla Milkshake FLAT
And the Trim Vanilla Milkshake semi-gloss, but in another post you have answer Hazy Skies ceiling flat and hazy Skies the trim!
Is the ceiling the same color of the trim?
Thanks you so much for your great taste.
dSPACE Studio Ltd Thank you for appreciating our work. The confusion is due to the fact that Vanilla Milkshake is the typical trim & ceiling color throughout the rest of the project, but in this hallway we went with Hazy Skies for both the trim and the ceiling color to compliment the darker wall tone. The post above incorrectly lists this room as having Vanilla Milkshake trim/ceiling color - it is Hazy Skies. Sorry for the confusion, and hopefully this clears it up!
dSPACE Studio Ltd Hi, great question. The trim detail around the windows is consistent with the trim seen in the foreground of this photo. This type of consistency really helps tie the spaces and rooms together. Thanks for your question and good luck with your project.

dSPACE Studio Ltd Hi, thanks for your question. We love the Chelsea Gray, and feel it is a very versatile color that will probably compliment your sofa. However, the best way to know for sure is to pick up a swatch of the Chelsea Gray so that you can see it next to your burgundy sofa and under the lighting in the room. Good luck with your project!

dSPACE Studio Ltd Hello - The trim paint color is Benjamin Moore Hazy Skies OC-48. I prefer Hazy Skies over bright white trim - It is more unexpected and unique. debbie1559 Could you tell me the colors of the blend and brand of stain you used for the floors? We are having our white oak refinished and I want that color. Thanks so much.

Beautiful space...have a question about the stain; wondering if if I have a dog and a 7 yr old, if a dark stain like this would be an alternative for us. We live in a 100 yr old house. I believe we have white birch floors (at least that's what we used on our family room edition). It's the narrower 1" board that does not have as much training/variation as the oak used here. This is exactly the look/color I was going for as we have a lot of wood detail, wide molding in our home. Currently our wood is a lighter/golden/reddish color. We are installing a sisal runner on our stairs and will need to refinish the stairs prior to intstallation and will then look at refinishing the rest of the house. Thank you »

dSPACE Studio Ltd The floor above has an oil based polyurethane applied to it. We like the oil based polyurethane on dark hardwood flooring applications because the amber tone in the oil adds depth to the flooring finish, and it is a very durable long lasting product. However, it takes longer to install than water based, and you would need to give the fumes more time to dissipate after installation. There are mixed opinions out there on the durability and longevity of water-based poly finishes. Water-based is typically better in an installation with a lighter stain where you don't want any of the amber tone from the oil based poly to influence the color of the hardwood floors, or where you need a finish with low fumes/quicker installation time. But keep in mind, the water based polyurethane may need to be re-applied more often then oil based. In both cases its important to have a quality installer who can tell you which brands he recommends, and the benefits of each. Thank you for your question and good luck with your project!
