karenbrunedds Thank you. It is beautiful the way that it frames the exterior. The choice of sheet rock return without molding works really well. Also, it appears as an extension of the built in bench..Nice work!
Talk about destinations. Thank goodness for the window seat in this Northern California ridge home to keep us all from wanting to walk right through the glass.
Of course, horizontal windows aren't the only ways to capture views of the surroundings. This house in Sonoma County, California takes advantage of the dramatic valley scenery with a pool and terrace. Inside every opportunity is taken to bring that scenery inside, even in this hallway. The window seat and view make a trip upstairs a slow and leisurely one.
The stunning view draws you in, no doubt about that, but without that little window seat, you might just brush past the window on this stair landing without stopping for a moment to take it all in. And how wasteful would that be? Simple, clean and modern, this unobtrusive detail is soft enough to make you want to stay a while.
Talk about a focal point! This may not be a large room, but installing such a window really makes an impact on this landing. I think I'd plop down on that window seat and forget why I was ever going up or down the stairs.
2. Ventilation. If you want a view but don't need ventilation in the area, a fixed window can be a good choice. Fixed windows can be combined with operable windows to save money. If your window, fixed or otherwise, is within 18 inches of the floor or near a window seat, you'll need to order tempered glass for safety.
I don't know about you, but this framed partial view of the pool and slice of the distant mountains topped by a vast, clear sky makes me want to run outside and see what lies beyond the limits of the window frame. I wonder what's beyond the far side of the pool. I'm compelled to go out and look over the edge.
VT (visible transmittance): How much visible-spectrum light transmits through a window. The higher the VT, the more visible light. Deciding how much visible light you want depends on how much daylighting you have and whether you need to reduce glare.
