jenniferruth The flowering plants in the center are called amaryllis. They grow from a large bulb, which you can usually buy in the fall to use as holiday house plants. Even Walmart should have them. They come in a number of different colors and patterns, most often red like the ones shown here, but also white, red and white striped, or pink and white. (Specialty growers have dozens to choose from.) You plant the bulb in potting soil in a pot just large enough to hold it. Once you start watering, it grows easily and quickly, and after some weeks, you have beautiful big blossoms. Don't put them put them outdoors (the way this photo shows) unless you live in a very warm climate like San Diego's.
