San Antonio-based Lake | Flato Architects also has designed a modular system of small structures that can be flexibly arranged on a site according to the needs of the owner. Here at the Miller Ranch, a dogtrot structure contains an open living space and kitchen separated from the master suite across the breezeway. A detached guest pavilion is placed to create an inner courtyard. The Texas climate is well suited to an arrangment of small individual one-room-deep pavilions with cross ventilation, much like the historic vernacular precedent.

Elsewhere in Texas is Lake | Flato's Porch House, a sustainable house made from a modular kit of parts. The example here illustrates a couple dogtrot houses, which feature breezeways between enclosed ends.

Do you crave space? This home takes the wide-open space of Texas to an extreme. The master bedroom, living area and guest rooms are three separate buildings connected by walkways.

Vernacular design is rooted in its place even when it takes on a modern form and uses modern materials. I would expect that these simple structures arranged on the landscape like a temporary encampment would be familiar to many. This teaches us that just as there is a vernacular to a home's design, there is a vernacular to how a house, or group of houses, is arranged on the land.
