This 1960’s era kitchen, complete with period fur-downs, short cabinets, and a star-trek console island was ripe for a remodel. Traffic flow was a big issue, as the utility room and garage door accessed the kitchen in the middle of the work triangle. By redirecting traffic flow through the kitchen by moving the garage access, and re-arranging the work areas, this gourmet kitchen is now ready for battle. Gone is the stain-grade cabinets, and console island, confusing layout, and the busy wallpaper. The focal point of this new kitchen is most certainly the 9 foot, black walnut, Red island. This spacious Island has a myriad of cool features, including under-counter cubbies for toddler crafts, two distinct sitting areas for work or socializing, and an in-island microwave drawer accessible to everyone. Just behind the island is a beautiful Viking range sitting just under a custom patina copper vent hood. The kitchen was widened over 16” and all the new painted cabinetry, including the double refrigerator finishes off an open, light and airy new gourmet kitchen. Add the pull-out pantry cabinets, the redesigned “mother’s desk”, and the farmhouse sink, and you have a masterpiece.

Window Size - Do you recall the dimensions of the window? Thanks! »
Dallas Renovation Group This is a custom made copper hood, hand rubbed to achieve a lateral patina. I have attached a close-up, so you can see the detail. This home had some real rustic charm, so we thought this was better than bright shiny copper.
Dallas Renovation Group The Overall Kitchen, including the breakfast nook to the left) was 17' wide x 28' long. From the end of the red island to the wall behind vent hood, it is 14.5'.
Dallas Renovation Group This is just rough-sawn Red Oak, with varying widths and lengths. The floor is probably 10+ years old, but after we moved everything around (literally), we interlaced new Red Oak floors, sanded, and re-stained it all, with a Poly finish.
Dallas Renovation Group The island is (was) custom made by a local Dallas-are cabinet maker. It was custom designed with the children's book nook underneath and seating area (right, with 3 stools).
Dallas Renovation Group This is 4" Thick, and took quite a bit of oil upon original installation (about 4 slather coats until it settled down). Best of Luck!
Is there an edge on this block? - You had told me it is 4" thick... I just love this island! Is there an edge on it? Wondering if I should do a radius or something simple but love this one so I was curious : ) »
The kitchen's new design revolves around the 9-foot-long island. Stow and his team kept the client's desire for a multipurpose kitchen in mind and designed a large island that could serve multiple functions. The island has two distinct seating areas, with under-counter cabinets for children's crafts and knickknacks on one end. The island countertop is custom made of 4" thick black walnut. To give the kitchen a warm, farmhouse feel, they painted it a rich red, and accented it with simple barstools the clients already owned. Speaking of focal points, you can incorporate red cabinetry with just an island. This island adds a punch of color to the surrounding creamy neutrals.Learn more about this kitchen
Try it out: This red island shows a semipermanent commitment to the hue. However, if a blue mood should strike the homeowner, it could be repainted without too much trouble.
Here's a way to put some strong colour in the kitchen (red) without having to commit to it, unlike a red stove or cabinetry. This island could be green or blue another year, and just change up some fabrics and accessories.
