They are tiles made from a natural stone called quartzite. Though not a granite, quartzite has a lot of the characteristics of granite. Any good, local, independent tile showroom can show you tiles just like this.

Quartzite as a very low water absorption level so I say yes.

Hi Janie,
I had to weigh out the pros and cons of this stone tile. The colours grabbed me and never let go so we went for it. It is a rough stone like a rough slate without the shale like edges and so I find that in the winter it requires a mat so that I don't have to get on my hands and knees and scrub it to clean it.
Just make sure you seal it well. Also be sure to use an experienced tile installer as the thicknesses vary and you wouldn't want to stub your toe. I personally I would not install this in a kitchen or bath unless it was a smoother version of ours. Good luck!

Sandra - Thank you so much for the honest and accurate information. Picking a floor is very difficult, and that is really helpful advice!
