How functional is the hood under heavy cooking - We are planning for a very similar range top island kitchen and with very similar hood. Our major concern is about cooking small spreading around the house. Please let us know how happy you with your kitchen.
Thanks

This looks like a Vent-a-Hood ISLH18 ยท Emerald, which makes excellent hoods, it is all they do and they do it well: http://ventahood.com/hoodmodels.jsp?id=20 You can see how powerful it is from the specifications:
http://ventahood.com/hoodmodels_specs.jsp?id=20 I wouldn't worry about pulling the smells out. For best results, just go for as short a exhaust duct as possible and most importantly, the straightest line.
I'm a bit of a messy cook and prefer to have my cooktop next to a wall, rather than an island (it does look stunning here though), which somewhat contains splatters.
Lawrence and Gomez Architects Hello, agsedehi, the cabinets in this photo are red birch natural finish in Shaker wide style, manufactured by UltraCraft. Thank you for your question, Juana Gomez

Note that depending on the rest of your home, you can actually have a hood that is too powerful and can negatively affect your indoor air quality (IAQ). There was a good article about it in Fine Homebuilding recently. Here's an online story: http://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/blogs/dept/green-building-curmudgeon/why-range-hoods-don-t-work
