Under the staircase is a closet, which houses the cat pan and food bowl... hidden from guests and the curious dog. A special entrance was created for the cats to access their area. Photo by Kelly Feiock.

Thinking of doing this too. - We are thinking of doing this same thing. When you opened the area up, did you have to finish the space on the side. Like we have an unfinished space under our stairs, and are worried about having to drywall it out and things. Also, do you have any issues with ventilating the space? »
Kelly The closet was already finished but was being used for general storage. You should definitely finish it if you are going to put cat litter in there... they kick litter out of the pan it's important to be able to wipe down the walls and clean the floor. As long as you scoop the litter regularly, ventilation is not a problem.
Kelly The walls were painted using a custom color - Behr Premium Plus, Interior Satin Enamel. It's difficult to read the label on the can, but it looks like:
Colorant - 0Z, 48, 96
AX Perm Yellow - 7, 8, 0
B Lamp Black - 0, 28, 1
I Brown Oxide - 1, 32, 0
KX White - 2, 26, 1
I didn't paint the secretary, so I have no idea what color the red paint is.
