Al Shams

In his quest to preserve the beauty of traditional Islamic architecture, Alan Adams has created another modern-day masterpiece. His Al Shams lattice panel is inspired by 14th century Mamluk architecture from Cairo, Egypt. This pattern once decorated a pair of minbar doors in the Mosque of Emir Sayf al-Din Qawsun. Today, the original doors can be viewed at the new Islamic Art Galleries of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In addition to decorating these elegant door panels, this ornate twelve-point pattern can be found on Moorish wall treatments in palaces throughout North Africa and Andalusia.

Recreated in beautiful American black walnut, this modern interpretation has been hand-crafted by Alan Adams. In a technique he developed, the individual wood pieces were carefully cut and assembled to resemble a woven pattern, typical of Islamic geometric design. Once carefully assembled, Al Shams was hand finished with natural oils and then sealed with beeswax.

Alan only uses woods that can be sustainably harvested and finishes that are natural and eco-friendly. He hopes his pieces will be preserved and shared for generations to come.

Along with the artwork, the buyer will receive a detailed description, along with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Alan Adams.
