What Houzz contributors are saying:

Blanket Flower (Gaillardia x grandiflora)Named for its resemblance to the vivid woven blankets of the American Southwest, this flower cloaks the garden in yellow, burgundy or rich red from midsummer into fall. Blanket flower prefers fertile, well-drained soil, but it will tolerate poor, dry soil once established. Deadhead to keep the flowers coming. The dwarf, compact ‘Goblin’ cultivar is a favorite with its showy flowers and incredible bloom time. ‘Burgundy’ is another excellent choice that stands 2 to 3 feet tall with deep red flowers. USDA zones: 3 to 10Water requirement: Drought tolerant Light requirement: Full sun Mature size: 1 foot to 3 feet

Blanket Flower(Gaillardia pulchella)Blanket flower is a reseeding annual that features trustworthy blooms in shades of red, yellow and orange, making it a perfect addition to your fall-hued garden. Great for meadows and wildflower gardens as well as for perennial beds and borders, blanket flower pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses as well as rudbeckia and salvia.USDA zones: As an annual, it will fare well in most all zones.Water requirement: Average to low once establishedLight requirement: Full to partial sunMature size: 18 to 36 inches tallBloom time: Summer to fallPlanting tips: Plant in spring or fall and let seeds fall to the ground when the plant is done blooming. Remove spent flower stalks after the first frost.

Long-Blooming Blanket FlowerIf you want a long-blooming perennial, blanket flower is a top choice. It begins flowering early in the summer and lasts until the frosty weather. During that time flowers in mixes of yellow, orange, red and maroon will attract butterflies. Blanket flower can handle both heat and wind and even tolerate some frost. Common name: Blanket flowerBotanical name: Gaillardia x grandifloraUSDA zones: AllWater requirement: ModerateLight requirement: Full sunMature size: 2 to 4 feetGrowing tips: Plant it in well-draining soil; you may need to amend heavy clay soil so the roots don’t rot in winter. Blanket flower grows easily from seed and often reseeds. If the plants become too crowded or start to die back, divide in early spring. Cutting for arrangements will encourage repeat blooms.
Distinguishing traits. The blanket flower you're most likely to see offered for sale is Gaillardia x grandiflora, a hybrid of two native American species from opposite sides of the country, G. pulchella and G. aristata. Gaillardia pulchella grows naturally across most of eastern and central North America, readily adapting to fields, forest clearings and even sand dunes. Gaillardia aristata is its western counterpart and grows anywhere from the hot deserts in Mexico to the frigid Canadian Rocky Mountains. Whatever the species or cultivar, however, they all go by the same common names: firewheel, blanket flower and Indian blanket.

Warm or cool. Another consideration is warm colors versus cool colors. Reds, yellows and oranges are on the warm side of the color wheel and result in a bright and cheery garden space.

Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) Tall, shrubby Russian sage is a versatile, drought-tolerant and super-low-maintenance stunner that will bloom up to 15 weeks even in hot, sunny sites. It’s especially nice planted beside pathways where its fragrant flowers can be appreciated. Or use it to bring height, color and texture to a late-summer border. Great companion plantings include daylily, salvia, dianthus, Japanese anemone, boltonia, orange coneflower and sedum.
