Does anyone know of a good source for fire pit rocks or glass instead of using fake logs? I've seen this look before used in a gas fire pit & it was really cool, but not sure where to find these rocks or glass rocks. »
If you're planning to burn wood, you need something pretty serious like the custom concrete fabrication above. Also if you're burning wood, check with your local jurisdiction about what is legal in your community. In many areas you may not enjoy a wood fire without a sparkscreen to protect surrounding combustibles, and in some places you may need to be at least ten feet from combustible materials (like a wood deck) or have to comply with other code requirements.
If you decide to "go gas", find a reputable NFI certified gas hearth professional to help you with it. Check here: http://nficertified.org/pages_consumers/consumers-1.html In amateur hands, gas can be much more dangerous than wood, but handled professionally, it is both safer and cleaner.
