I have just completed the addition of an island. I choose a walnut top to add warmth to the rest of the counters which are all granite. The walnut was finished with a product called Waterlox. After using the island for food prep for about a month, I can honestly say, it's just as impervious to water as the granite. Hope this helps.

traceelz What about cutting on it? I can cut food on the granite. Can you cut or chop food on the wood?

Also, as a side note...my current kitchen is Jay Rambo cabinetry. A One Kitchen Design in Annapolis Md did it for us. White Shaker style cabinets , farmhouse sink, black soapstone countertops, dark cherry island, Wolf range, stainless appliances, plantation shutters. I love my current kitchen and we get tons of compliments.
We are looking at another home in a different part of town that will need lots of updates, including a new kitchen! Once we get the house we will contact Kathleen (and I think Jim) again.

I would love to do a mahogany, walnut or maple counter top on my next island but I also want the sink built in into the island and I am really worried about how practical that is for the long term....wood and water?? If you have any feedback on that I would appreciate it.

Pam Smith Can anyone tell me if they have the extended cabinets (spice racks) on each side of the stove? If so how do you like it and does it cause a problem?
