StoneMar Natural Stone Company LLC I just happened upon this question so I thought I'd add:
Travertine is created in nature by expelling water (think: stalagtites and other natural formations), so it's perfect in wet areas. It is often used as exterior building cladding, paving stones, and pool surrounds. Many of these exterior installations are never even sealed and are exposed to the elements. Any shower made of travertine will perform like these exterior installations. Just think: all of Rome was made from travertine, and I'd say that it's held up pretty well without any special sealer.

I hope that helps!
