Distinguishing traits. While this plant has all the low-maintenance and water-wise benefits that come from being a succulent, its graceful arching form and colorful buds complement more than just the desert modern garden. Fleshy green leaves shoot up 6 to 8 inches with golden flower stalks rising high above the foliage. 'Hallmark' blooms spring through fall, and year round in some climates. Smaller and more compact than the straight snake flower species, the real distinguishing difference is color. 'Hallmark' produces an orange bloom while the straight species flowers are yellow. Here you can see orange 'Hallmark' planted next to the original.
Bulbine(Bulbine frutescens 'Hallmark')It has the drought tolerance of a succulent, the low and grassy texture of a turfgrass, and spikes of the bright orange flowers of a, well, bulbine. Plant this South African native as a foil for coarser plants, at the edge of flower beds or along pathways, where the waving stalks of orange blooms will attract honeybees and butterflies. While just about any bulbine will work wonders for an outdoor space, the 'Hallmark' variety reseeds less and is easier to find at your nursery.Bulbine Is drought tolerant and mostly maintenance free, but it does benefit from mulching, deadheading and division in spring or fall. In extremely hot, sunny or dry situations, it may need additional irrigation or shade in summer to keep it going until a rebloom in fall.

If you get stung by a bee, pick a fleshy bulbinella leaf, slit it open and rub the juice on the sting. The pain should start to subside almost immediately.
