maybe you could do this to you dining room cabinets. It would look great with the distressed mirrors. Actually, you do not have to use those kind of light-- just use the structure -- cabinets to the ceiling but with a boxed area above the cabinet to put in some kind of lighting.

The other option I like is to get new frameless mirrors that cover most of the wall on both sides and longer light fixtures. It would will give the perception that things align and make the room bigger
