angelina4140 The bottom of the light should be just above eye level, but heights can vary depending on the heights of the countertop, the homeowner and the ceiling. Sometimes with larger fixtures or a higher ceiling, that is too low. In this case, I would say about four feet.
Renaissance Kitchen and Home Dear cel1958,
I've noticed that you are really interested in the look of Painted MDF cabinetry as opposed to Painted wood. There are several Pros and Cons to both options.
1) MDF cabinetry is very durable and will accept most paint finished just like wood. The advantage is that this material can be more stable than wood and can be manufactured from 1 slab of material instead of the typical door construction method which is usually made up of multiple pieces of wood joined together. The other advantage is that if you pick a 1 pc. door style the finish will not split with the normal expansion and contraction due to changes in climate. The only disadvantage of MDF is that depending on the door style and detail, the MDF material may not be as crisp on the inside edges as conventional wood. Many Hi End Manufacturing facilities have CNC cutting machines that make this disadvantage almost completely undetectable. I would check with your kitchen supplier to see what they offer in MDF material doors and what options/ finished can be put on them. As far as cost goes MDF cabinetry normally is less expensive than wood, but that depending specifically to the manufacturer. We have used MDF cabinetry for over 20yrs. and feel if it a great way to get "Budget Friendly High Impact Design". If you are interested in Painted wood cabinetry than the sky's the limit. Painted cabinetry is made by must manufacturers in a wide variety of door styles and finishes. I would also check with your Kitchen Professional on which Lines of cabinetry they offer and the advantages/options available to you. Painted wood cabinet is and will always be a classic. They are usually only limited by your imagination. The only negative I have found with wood painted cabinetry is the expansion and contraction cracking. If this is something that you can't deal with I would suggest you look toward going with MDF.
beshu Could this colour be painted over existing oak cabinets without removing the stain first? They are a fairly yellow oak right now. We painted some coffee tables by applying a product called BIN first...as a sort of primer. I am looking to update my existing kitchen.
Shannon Poe With the right amount of sanding and a good adhering primer, you could paint your cabinets any color. With oak, it will be hard to cover the grain though.
Cindy Moore What is the finish on your cabinets? is it simi-gloss or something like an egg-shell? We're just getting ready to paint our cabinets white and really need the advice. We have a lot of natural white in our kitchen. Your kitchen is beautiful and Iove the bookshelf idea!
Can anyone tell me if these are 42" cabinets with 18" cabinets on top (with 10 foot ceilings)? I am trying to visualize what the look would be in our new house. »
I like the cabinetry and the open facing of the smaller cabinets on top, not the open facing of the eye level ones though. The cabinet design and pulls are nice
