The wood is wide southern yellow pine (SYP) and is stained with a custom blend of MinWax colors, then finished with a satin topcoat. We made up several samples on extra pieces of SYP to get just the color we wanted, not too red and not too brown and complimentary to the antique heart pine countertops.
TIP: If you do mix a custom stain color make sure to write down the colors and proportions you used so you can replicate it if you have to. Later on we did some remodeling to an adjacent room and had to match the floor exactly, which we were able to do because we had the formula.
Artisan Kitchens LLC This particular granite is called Crema Bordeaux but is one that is very variable in color and pattern, so you would have to look locally to see if you can find a similar slab. Sometimes it's more gray, sometimes more burgundy/pink. This stone has a bit of both!
Wood Countertop - How difficult is it to care for the wood ? I've got two kids in elementary school. Would it survive ? or not worth the trouble. Looks gorgeous. »
Artisan Kitchens LLC There are some types of wood countertops that would work with kids, but this isn't one of them, being made from antique heart pine. The owners of this home are very careful and do not have children, and even so I designed it so the wood tops are in areas where they won't be subject to water, food prep, or other abuse.
If you love the look of wood there are options for you:
-Use a top that is relatively inexpensive and resign yourself to having it refinished from time to time
-Only use wood in accent areas that don't get much use, or
-Try one of the new special finishes like Durata to protect your wood top
These wood tops are made from antique pine boards harvested from very old homes, barns and outbuildings in the area, which is why they have such a beautiful patina and character. They were custom made for this project.
This is not something available for purchase from a specific vendor, unfortunately. You may be able to find someone locally who can do this for you.
Artisan Kitchens LLC this backsplash is a soft, tumbled marble, but you could find a ceramic or porcelain that could work as well, or a vertical beadboard to either match or contrast with the cabinets.
Artisan Kitchens LLC It's not the brand name, it's the quality that's important. It's always a good idea to be sure the sink you install in your (more than likely) granite countertops last as long as the stone does...which is virtually forever.
Also, cheap sinks often do not come with proper insulation, may have quality control issues, or discolor over time. If you end up having a problem with the sink it may mean replacing the entire countertop.
debbiemarco you are 100% correct. Replacing a faucet or something else will not be as complicated as replacing an undermount sink when having granit or marble countertop. You always get what you pay for and that applies for everything in life (from kitchen sinks to cars to electronics).
rkalata I love this concept of mixing granite with wood countertops. How would this look if the cabinets were also stained instead of white? Would it be too much? We are in the process of purchasing granite for our kitchen about the same shade as these. We were going to buy granite for all of the surfaces, but this might be a good way to save a little money. The cabinets are currently a natural maple. We plan to make them a bit darker later. They will be a shade about the tone of the wood floors in this picture. Oh, we have hardwoods too. A bit lighter than these.
Artisan Kitchens LLC You certainly could mix wood and stone tops on wood cabinets but I'd be careful about mixing too many tones of wood. Perhaps match the floor color to the countertop color and have the cabinets be a second (wood) color. While I've seen multiple shades of wood work successfully it does take a good eye to make it all come together without looking too chaotic and/or woodsy.
holidaybaby - Hi there! Love, love, love this kitchen and it's exactly what I'm tyring to create in my galley kitchen. Two questions: what color is the paint - it looks liek a bright white versus soft white, and what is teh flooring? Ilm thinking about going with a dark cork....thank you! »
This is actually not a bright white at all....in fact, it's quite creamy. To give you some idea, the trim on the doorway and door is Benjamin Moore Navajo White, which is not very white at all!
This flooring is southern yellow pine with a rich red-brown stain. I think a darker cork floor would work beautifully with this color scheme as well.
Thanks for the compliments and best of luck with your project.
My memory says the finish was an antique pewter but I can't seem to find it on the site - the finish may have been dark iron. The handles are a little bit rustic and handmade looking, which is nice and works well with the custom wood tops.
The wood countertops were made locally by a company that uses beautiful old reclaimed wood with lots of character, and they hand rub the finish to bring out the patina.
Artisan Kitchens LLC You are correct - that is Crema Bordeaux. This particular lot has a lot of grey in it; sometimes you will find it with a lot more red, or it will be all red!
As always, I recommend that you personally select the slabs that will be going into your project, do not buy sight unseen or rely on photographs.
Artisan Kitchens LLC Hi Laxmom,
The backsplash, with the exception of the island, is a rustic tumbled marble in an ivory color with matching grout. It has quite a bit of texture to it and is very neutral. It's something I am sure you can find locally; it's not an exotic stone.
Good luck with your project!

Do you have any additional photos? - Hi - I love this kitchen so much! It has all the elements we are considering for ours - cream bordeaux granite, cream colored cabinets, hardwood floors, integrating with wood or copper (on that back countertop). I'd love to see any additional photos you might have! All the best - and thanks for posting! »
