alwaysdesigning I would furr down the cabinet walls from the ceiling so the cabinets do not go up that high; furr down so the cabinets are at a reasonable height
lucindalane I think this depends on what your needs are in the kitchen. Would cabinets that high be convenient? My mom has ten foot ceilings in her house, and a carpenter friend did what alwaysdesigning suggested, I believe, and built the wall out from the existing one and down to the height of the cabinet. However, if you don't mind some space above your cabinets, you could always decorate it, or use it to store items that are attractive enough to serve as decoration in the kitchen. It would all depend on what your personal style is. If you like a sleek style, then you might want to take the cabinets up to the ceiling, or fill in the space by "bumping out" the existing wall over the cabinets as suggested. If your style is the kind where you like to fill empty spaces with interesting things, then the open style could be the way to go. If you didn't want tall cabinets, but these other things don't appeal to you either, you could opt to paint the kitchen as dark a color as your personal style would dictate to de-emphasize the height above the cabinets.
what to do - ..i live in a small house with my three sisters ... i would like to furnish it........please advice me on the appropriate furniture to consider and what will make the room interesting to look at »
Emily Hurley Hi Nancy, That sounds like a great design dilemma. You should post it as a discussion and attach photos of the rooms you need help with here: http://houzz.com/discussions
TV Accessories - I am in the process of building my home. I have windows on either side of my fireplace as shown in this picture. I am having difficulty figuring out how to disguise all the TV accessories. I had thought about a small built-in cabinet to one side of the fireplace, but the other side of the fireplace will have an entrance to a hallway(not enough walking room) so I didn't know if that would throw it off balance. Would really love to have floor to ceiling windows with nothing blocking the view. Any suggestions?? Thanks so much »
Media Decor Basically a recess is cut into the stone (hire stonemason) if it has already been done. It is messy, but not a big deal.
If the purpose is to recess a TV, have the cutout made about 1-2" larger than TV. Have a .5-.75" box built of ply and insert into recess. The TV should be slightly proud of the stone. Finish it off with a picture frame about 3-5" wide to conceal the cutout.
