Is it possible to see the full layout of this one level home - Looking to build a one level retirement home. No steps, stairs, wide hallway and door openings. Thank you »
Double-sided fireplace? - Is this fireplace open to inside and out? What kind of structure is between the house wall and indoor/outdoor fireplace? Can one put an inside/outside placement of fireplace? »
COASTROAD Hearth & Patio Since no one from Birdseye Design has responded yet, I might be able to help.
Looking a the other photos of the project, it appears that the interior fireplace is in a different part of the house.
Having said that, it is possible to do either back-to-back or even a see-through inside/outside fireplace.
We don't recommend the see-through type because of the different heating needs of the two sides. Imagine sitting out on the porch on a cool fall evening with the fire going for several hours to keep you warm. When it becomes late, you go back inside the house to find that the fireplace has made it uncomfortably warm inside the house. Since you have no control over how much heat goes to each side, it isn't a very practical solution. Two back-to-back fireplaces are better.
As if that wasn't tricky enough, here's the real clincher...you can't really see the blue hour with the naked eye. Nope, but your camera can. Are you scratching your head and saying, huh?
Light it up. You'll extend the hours you can enjoy the porch. A mix of overhead light, sconces, table and floor lamps and candlelight will provide the right light for a variety of activities, from dinner to reading outdoors at twilight.
What do you do to get your porch ready for warm months? Please share with us in the comments section.
