NJ Project, Charlotte, NC

The side yard became an appropriate entry to the oriental-inspired back garden. The previous low metal gate did nothing to promote anticipation in the mind of the visitor. We left some turf, cutting it into a serpentine pattern. The panicum 'Dallas Blues' will grow to 3-5' in height. The idea of using this plant combination was to transport the visitor back to his or her childhood where he or she might have been running through a grassy field, stumbling upon a mysterious treasure. The serpentine pathway slows down the visitor and creates that sense of anticipation. I chose a 'Merlot Majik' mimosa tree, which will be pruned in an appropriate way when it grows, because the very dark foliage speaks of mystery and complements the color of the doors and frame. These doors are 8 feet wide; the entire structure being over 10 feet. This imposing height creates a childlike sense within the mind of the visitor. Photo by Jay Sifford.

Hi. Sorry for the delay in answering as I was out of town. It's Benjamin Moore 'Heritage Red'. Thanks for the question.

Hi. Try www.orientalfurnishings.com. Since they are on pivots, I found the best way to securely mount them, after building a wooden frame out 4 x 6s, is to buy some 1/2" flanges with bearings (www.primebearings.com), and buy some 3/8" lag screws about 8" long. Drill the lag screws down into the pivot points making sure they are very straight, cut off the heads, insert the heads into the flanges and tighten the screws to hold it in place.

This photo shows a suburban side yard that leads to an Asian-style backyard garden. The 8-foot Chinese doors add a sense of mystery and anticipation of what is to come. The curved turf pathway is flanked by mass plantings of Panicum virgatum 'Dallas Blues', a switchgrass that grows to 4 to 5 feet by summer. The shape of the pathway inspires a sense of journey and discovery. What's around the next curve and behind the doors?
