A Small Retreat by the Ocean

The endless beach bordering the Pacific Ocean is strikingly sparse yet beautiful with gently sloping hills and yellow flowers moving with the wind.

A cluster of geometric volumes forms this 950 square-foot getaway, to compliment the minimalism of its natural environment. The house floats on concrete piles as not to disturb the natural formation of the ever changing sand berms. Yet it demands a presence, colorful like a beach ball, against the Gray Northwestern backdrop.

As the bright red door opens into the house, the main axis reveals a framed view out to the ocean. This main corridor connects and separates the two square of the public [cooking, dining and entertaining] and private [reading and resting].

Because pilotis provide points of support in lieu of larger linear systems, their use as a foundation for a house ensures that the structure has the least impact on the existing terrain. The house simply and gently touches the ground in a few spots only.

Like the way the 2 boxes of the house intersect. Perhaps use flat roof w parapet walls instead of sharp angled roof. Like one higher than the other.
