The exterior construction consists of fibre-cement panel and cedar finish on conventional 2x6 framing; The walls are insulated using a combination of batt insulation and spray-foam in the joist cavities at the perimeter.
The windows are triple-pane and perform extremely well in colder climates. Conversely they minimise heat gain during short, but sometimes hot summer heat waves. There are no 'cooling' costs per say. To take advantage of the narrow lot design, we considered passive cooling techniques to maintain a comfortable indoor climate. This was realized by implementing natural ventilation mechanisms, such as cross and stack ventilation techniques.
The upper 2 storey volume also projects beyond the main floor level to provide an overhang for protection and solar shading.
The foundation is conventional concrete on1" rigid insultation on 2x4 frost wall with batt insulation. The concrete basement slab was set on 2" rigid insulation.
That fishbowl effect disappears during the day when the trees and other surroundings are reflected in the large glass windows. It's good here to point out that many of the photos serve to highlight the depth of the houses at night, such that window shades are nonexistent. Many homeowners living with such expanses of glazing often install something to modulate light and views.
Thanks for your interest in the LG House project.
