What Houzz contributors are saying:

Looking at floorplans will give you a feeling for how an architect thinks about how to live within that setback-dictated footprint. Layout, flow and taking advantage of natural light, shade, views and breezes all influence the lifestyle within the home. As we move inside you'll be able to see how 9-foot ceilings, good proportions, an open floor plan and easy flow give the interior a calm and comfortable feel.
Here is another example with a lower floor (top) and upper floor (bottom) together. While it looks like the second floor is much smaller than the first floor, they are both basically a rectangle of the same size; the first floor is drawn with detailed outdoor spaces (recall the Wright example earlier), making it appear larger. Yet as the site plan earlier also showed, it's important to articulate these exterior spaces, to design and understand how the exterior and interior realms relate. Compare this plan to the previous one, especially in the allotment of the living-dining-kitchen spaces. This plan is a bit more traditional, placing the public living space toward the front and the more private kitchen/dining space at the rear.
Learn about the bagua and find the symbolism of each room. If you want to delve a bit deeper into feng shui, you will need to familiarize yourself with the bagua. The bagua map is an octagon, with each of the eight sides corresponding to a different area of life: reputation, relationships, children, helpful people, career/path in life, self-knowledge, new beginnings/family and prosperity. The center represents health.By positioning the bagua map over a floor plan of your home or a specific room, you can determine where the areas of the bagua are in your own space.
Add a storage map. Noting down where exactly in the house everything is stored can be incredibly useful when you need to find something, whether it's an emergency or just time to hang the Christmas lights. Use an actual floor plan if you have one; if not, you can create your own simple sketch of each floor of your house. Being as specific as possible, note where in each room boxes or other items are stored.

Supplement with photos or video. Using digital photos is one option, but you may find it easier to create a video tour of your home to document your belongings. Whether you are taking photos or video, start at the front and work your way through each room — try to go in the same order used on your checklist. Add a storage map. This record, often used to document belongings for insurance purposes, can also be a really helpful tool if you are trying to declutter, prepare for emergencies, clear space for a remodel or just get organized. Check out these tips to create a thorough home inventory and streamline your belongings at the same time. Add to ideabookby Lauren Leonard Interiors Make Your Inventory Choose your checklist. The first step in making a home inventory is getting your hands on a comprehensive checklist — one from your own insurance company is best. Review the checklist before getting started. Add to ideabookby TreHus Architects+Interior Designers+Builders Work through your home, room by room. Following your checklist, work your way slowly through the entire house — you may want to divvy up the task over several weekends. Record a brief description of each item, how many you have, how much it cost and the year you purchased it. Don't leave out any nooks or crannies. Craft rooms, sheds, attics, workshops, porches and garages should all be carefully examined and documented. Add to ideabookby RW Anderson Homes Supplement with photos or video. Make your inventory Choose your checklist – insurance companies sometimes offer them Work through room by room Supplement with photos or video Use your list to declutter Use your list to eliminate multiples Highlight valuable items Mark your calendar for a big junk toss Box everything Box everything. After clearing out space in your storage areas, think about ways to make your storage really work for you. One simple but effective strategy is to tuck every single item in storage — whether in closets, cupboards or in deep storage — into a box or bin. Use storage for rotating items too. Consider digital backups.
