The window seat looks as if might be concealing a radiator. Can you tell me the height? - I need to conceal a radiator in my own kitchen and this is lovely... is there a "general guideline" for the distance between the seat height and the table height? »

Is the living room a few steps down? If so, what did you do with the cabinets on the living room side? I am looking to open up my kitchen to my living room which is two steps down and I don't know what the cabinets would look like in the living room and if the counter would be too high.
Thank you. »
bepsf If your kitchen cabinets are 36" high, and your steps are 6" each, that means that the top of the counter on the LR side would be 48" - a bit too high for a bar counter.
Best to install cabinets or open shelves on the living room side and use the space for added storage.
Inspired Interiors The small desk area by the living is actually a small nook. On the other side there is a piece of furniture. With your situation you can put in some kind of built in bookshelf that will accommodate the height of the wall.
Transitional tip: Make sure your space has a natural flow by repeating colors and materials from one room to another. Use wall paint in the same tone and fabrics in similar colors and varying textures.
Afraid to do your entire island open? Then just do a small one and push it up against a closed cabinet island. That way you don't have to worry about the transition between shaped legs intersecting with square panels.
Tip: In order to fit that drawer in, the top flat section of the leg is extended down a bit, allowing for a good transition between cabinet and leg.
Add a butcher block island. If you're not crazy about the idea of changing out the countertops, then buy a island with a butcher block top that you can take with you when you move. In the case of our Houzz reader's question, a freestanding butcher block is the perfect way to finish off the end of the cabinets where they plan to remove the "Starship Enterprise peninsula."
KS - I don't think I like the bench up against the window with the table against the bench. I would want some padding on the bench and no pillows. Also, my windows are very low to the floor, so the bench would come higher than the windows so I think this would look awkward.
