Wood plank is a pretty big design element when it comes to a lake house. Because design is about making things your own, I love the idea of wood plank installed on walls — mixing it up horizontally and vertically. Stick with a gray tone to keep the natural light abundant; super dark or heavy stains can instantly make the space darker. Also play with art to bring nautical touches inside. In this photo, a swimmer is depicted in the painting above the fireplace. That one touch goes a long way.

Brick fireplaces are a classic, but the gray coloring of this reclaimed wood, particularly against white walls, creates a cool, crisp vibe.

This beautiful fireplace wall stands up to the scale of the soaring ceiling, making it possible to use a small fireplace. The wood was originally in a barn in Texas. "The house was designed to be a part of the landscape. This was accomplished by how the house sits in the site, the placement of windows and the position of walls for views," says Pam Lamaster-Millet, the project's architect. "We felt the reclaimed wood was appropriate for the main focal point of the living space, as an extension of the wooded site into the house, and a nod to the agricultural area of Algoma."

The towering gray-wood wall, which follows the line of the cathedral ceiling, gives strong presence to this living area.

Textures and materials also relate to the greater context. The wood surrounding the small electric fireplace is from a barn in Texas. Using weathered or reclaimed wood offers texture and a timeworn gray patina. If you are favoring grays and whites at home and would like a way to bring in a feeling of the outdoors, this is a great way to do so. The wood paneling around the fireplace feels so right.
