rgerik My huband is doing them and he has stained several pieces of alder and they look great but i want the deeper espresso look. Any suggestions??? Shewin Williams is where we are getting the stains.
Kelly Cross These cabinets are actually a cherry with a stain and glaze combination. Sometimes it is difficult to get alder this dark because different woods accept stain differently and alder certainly takes a few processes to get to a dark expresso color. It seems like you can generally do a wash coat on alder and get it looking that dark (of course along with a couple of coats of stain). The glaze is also a great way to help make the wood darker. Rather than using the glaze to accent (which is typically the way you see it used), use it as a top coat make your stain appear darker.
