Along one of the Mission District’s most cosmopolitan blocks, an Italianate home is expanded with two substantial yet stealthy additions. Peeking out above the restored front façade, a new third story bedroom level hints at the comprehensively transformed spaces within. The project integrates modern design, bountiful natural light sources, high efficiency systems, and repurposed building materials with new and original hand-crafted detailing.

Where did you get the bedroom door from? And was it pre-finished? Thanks! »
Chr DAUER Architects its a doulas fir 5 panel "shaker" door standard from Simpson or TM Cobb. This should be pretty readily available around the country, I would ask at your local lumberyard.and or door/window supplier. These were field-finished with clear water-based varnish
Chr DAUER Architects My pleasure but...... I will personally attest to finding just as many beautiful and well crafted things within the cities, towns and villages of our own shores. Makers are everywhere, whether it be Uzbekistan or Urbana, IL.
Love how the bedspread has a bright contemporary, yet antique look and brings all the other colors in the room together. Is it handmade and is it a silk blanket? »
Chr DAUER Architects This piece, well as those in the dining room and guest bedroom is by Benicia Gantner

mhodes Thank you! Her work is very creative!
In a way this painting over the bed reminds me of the illustration on The Beatles' album cover Yellow Submarine by Heinz Edelmann, which takes me back to my childhood : )
White bedding is made interesting by wrapping the mattress with a length of Suzani fabric. A throw and pillows echoing the deep gray color on an accent wall complete the look.
Tip: This look can be easily duplicated by turning a favorite fabric into a long panel to layer over solid bedding.
4. Play with color and patterns for a more casual look. Simple, clean white bedding is offset with a highly patterned coverlet for an artistic feel. In this modern room, the palette is simple: grays and white, with strong punches of color.
3. Tucked band. Similar to the roll-down but more tailored, the tucked band is often achieved with an accent textile. If you've traveled and brought back a gorgeous piece of fabric you're not sure what to do with, consider making it part of your bedding scheme. You'll get to enjoy it everyday without over-using (and possibly ruining) it.
The 3rd floor bedrooms’ clear-finished Douglas fir doors, deep-hued accent walls, and bright modular carpeting add warmth, comfort, and simplicity to the sleeping
spaces.
We all know how to paint, we just don't want to deal with the hassle of prep and clean up. But do you really want to pay someone to do it? Instead of taking on a whole room, start with one accent wall. It will take no time at all. I prefer not use the blue painters tape because it take so long to trim out the ceiling and base boards, and paint seems to invariably bleed through anyway. A steady hand will go a long way for trimming. Note: in this paint job the door frame and base board were painted the same color as the wall for an easier paint job and a modern, uniform look.
A multi-colored quilt is a great accessory for a bed that is filled with white linens. Here, a suzani brings a fun dose of color and pattern into the space, while adding a cultural feel.
Ethnic patterns are a great way to add color to a room without getting girly. In this room light is balanced by dark, and spareness is balanced by touches of color and pattern.
