What Houzz contributors are saying:

The garden continues to thrive with the help of community donations. A local Whole Foods store donated these rainwater collection barrels.

Seiwa Biodegrader Ltd. added this to Recapturing Household Water Part 1: Rain water barrel spouts
August 8, 2014
THE SPOUT: What you get once you have threaded the flanged threaded pipe bit into the elbow, sandwiching the barrel wall, is a hub that is the most basic spout. See Mariana Pickering’s photo of some fine plastic rain barrels fitted with fancy brass spouts. This is generally what we think of first when looking for a spout. But closeable spouts have many drawbacks: 1. Expensive and not super easy to find. 2. Generally don’t last a winter in cold areas. 3. Restrict flow when perhaps you want the restriction further down the an irrigation line. 4. Clog with sediment naturally found in rainwater washing off a roof. 5. There may be lead in that brass. There are plastic equivalent spouts with much the same problems. WHAT TO DO FOR A SPOUT, THEN? The easiest, cheapest, and most long-lived solution to fitting some kind of closure valve is … don’t have a spout closure. Huh? ‘SPOUTLESS SPOUT' VERSION ONE: The raised hose. Included in the package in the fitting (formally, a “bulkhead fitting") photo is a hose barb that you can fit to the standard 1-1/2” ABS hub, taking care to cut off the tip with a hacksaw first. This gives you a hose barb. Stick a hose on the barb, and on the other end of the hose (be it 3 feet or 30 feet long) attach some kind of hook with which you can hang the open end of the hose above the height of the top of the barrel. Not only will this prevent the water from running out until you lower the house at the spot needed, it will act as an overflow if the barrel gets too full during a rainstorm. I first saw this in a drawing in the Beatrix Potter series. If it worked for Victorian gardens, it will work for yours. ‘SPOUTLESS SPOUT' VERSION TWO: Irrigation system as a spout. The hub in the fitting photo is an “1-1/2 ABS” hub. As such, with a simple trip to the hardware megastore, you can find an endless diversity of ABS pipe, cement, elbows, tees, splitters, and so on to build your rain-fed sub-surface irrigation system.
